I'm not aware of any way to do what you want. You're going to have to deal with the disgusting waste of space.
He already is dealing with a disgusting OS to begin with, so I don't think it will be that much of a problem.
Joking aside, I can't believe they thought that this was good enough for portrait devices. A quick search revealed no real fixes, not even by the community.
