Updating from Windows 8 to 8.1?

Rickafer

I just bought a key for Windows 8, installed it and everything, and now I am trying to get onto Windows 8.1. However, every time I try to use Window Updates, it hangs and crashes the settings app. How can I fix this?

Try to download Windows 8.1 from Windows store and install it from there.

That's what won't work, when I try to do that it says I need to install updates first.

One option is to install windows 8.1 with a generic key and then activate it with the windows 8 key, I've used it several times and it works fine.

I've linked the forum topic that I initially used, it's great for doing huge batch installs or for when 8 to upgrade to 8.1.
