Hello everyone,

Im wrapping up on finishing this build and I just wanted the opinions of the people here. Just recently started watching Linus's videos and joining this community.

If the cost can come down, great, but im perfectly fine with spending the $1100-$1200 for this computer so consider the budget <$1200

So, basic ideas behind this build:

CPU: i5 is fine, this will primarily be for gaming. Possibly streaming but i doubt it unless its for something fun like cities: skylines. Also potential for some photoshop use but nothing too heavy or demanding. I chose the 4690k for overclocking potential with games, but if there is a better chip for the price please let me know. I also dont know much about coolers [brand] other then they need to fit in my case and how they work. Is this a good CPU cooler? There are some reviews about the fan becoming lose and not working correctly but they're few and far between.

Motherboard: This is a requirement. I will be using a thunderbolt display (apple household. I started with windows pc's but for school, design, and the awesome screen I went with the retina macbook back in 2012 and then got the display a year ago) which means i need a thunderbolt port. There are some boards out there in the $75-120 range which allow a thunderbolt card to be attached but those cards are either hard to find or cost $60-100 which brings the price back up to $200. This board has the thunderbolt port embedded in which solves that problem.

Other then the motherboard everything else is open game. I want the SSD but dont need a second storage. This will just be a gaming machine and I have external hard drives for files anyways that I can always plug in. The power supply was recommended but I am a little worried it wont be enough power but going through the power calculators it seems like it will be more then enough.

Oh the case, thats a requirement because I already own it. This puts a limit on size of CPU cooler and Graphics cards. This already is taken care of in my build but something to be aware of.

MAXIMUM VIDEO CARD LENGTH

12.17"

There is also a limit on CPU cooler size that I found before but I cant find again.

EDIT: found

138mm

I hope I shared everything I needed to. Please let me know if you can improve on my build.

Thanks.

Replace that CPU cooler with a Hyper 212 Evo or H80 to maximize your overclock

thats gonna be pretty hard for him since its a HTPC case

Wait so you already have the Silverstone case, correct?

"Oh the case, thats a requirement because I already own it. This puts a limit on size of CPU cooler and Graphics cards. This already is taken care of in my build but something to be aware of. "

If so then:

Get a cheaper low profile CPU Cooler (http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Zalman-Ultra-Quiet-CPU-Cooler-CNPS90F_52927.html)

Get a desktop case

and lastly get a ethernet cable or a powerline, wireless is pretty unreliable.

CPU: Intel i7-4790K @ 4.7GHz --- RAM: Lenovo 1600MHz 16GB --- MOBO: Gigabyte Z97-G7 --- GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW ACX 2.0+--- PSU: Corsair CX600 --- Case: Corsair Air 540 --- Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 --- OS: Windows 8.1 --- Monitor: 24" AOC G2460P + Dell 19" --- Mouse: Logitech MX Perfromance --- Keyboard: Corsair K70 (Cherry MX Brown) --- Audio: Sennheiser HD558

Don't buy a GTX 980, it's overpriced! Buy 2 GTX 970s or 2 R9 290s intstead (the R9 290s would even be cheaper)

if this is the case maybe you can get a cheaper motherboard and just get a displayport to mini dp

That will not work with the thunderbolt display. Apple has required that only thunderbolt to thunderbolt connections will work with their monitors unfortunately :(. I spent a lot of time researching that trying to find ways around it.

As for the case, i would prefer not to have to replace it because I like how it looks in my set up. But to the guy with the newegg post, ill look through them, maybe there is another case ill like just as much.
