Buying PC components and building it for like 400$ then selling it on ebay or craiglist for like 800-1000 dollars?

My friend earned some good money off it.

If you do do it, at least the first time dont go straight for 800 but 500 or 600, that is still an increase. I have no idea if it is a good idea though.

If you want to stoop to the level of places like Best Buy, HP, Apple and Alienware, then go ahead. I would personally have a boutique thing where people call you up, ask you to build a computer they want with the pieces they want and then you charge like $50-100 to build it and set it up for them. Feels less like a dick move to me.

$50 doesn't pay bills.

You can, at least you'll get profit but selling it for like $800-1000 is just too much (I feel sorry to the buyer lol).... Unless you're building high end.

Well even high end builders make only 15 percent from the sale. I guess if you can trick a few fellows, it would work but it can't be sustainable.
