If you want to ease into the series, play them in order but skip 3 (5 is the same game but leagues better). If you want to hit all the good ones, play 4-9, skipping 8. IIRC, most if not all FF titles from 1-10 are currently available on PSN. Many of the early games are available on mobile as well.

Final Fantasy 7 and 9 are my favorites from the 3D era, while all three SNES games (4, 5 & 6) are excellent from the 2D era. Final Fantasy 3 is also good, but a big dated even in the updated 3D remake form. Overall, I would start with SNES games as 2D graphics age much better than 3D. Final Fantasy 4 also has a 3D remake available (as well as "HD" remake and a couple of sequels).

If you are looking to play on PC (without emulation), your choices are FF3, FF4, FF7, FF8 and FF13 trilogy. I would rank those as follows:

  1. Final Fantasy 7
  2. Final Fantasy 4 (3D remake version)
  3. Final Fantasy 3 (3D remake version)
  4. Final Fantasy 13 (trilogy)
  5. Final Fantasy 8

If you have an iOS device you have access to all the 2D Final Fantasies (all with "HD" remastered graphics) including the two 3D remakes (3 and 4). Not sure which of them are available on Android. There's also Final Fantasy Dimension on mobile which is a brand new 2D installment for the series. For mobile I would rank them:

  1. Final Fantasy 5
  2. Final Fantasy 6
  3. Final Fantasy 4 (I believe both the 3D remake and 2D remaster + sequels are available)
  4. Final Fantasy Dimension
  5. Final Fantasy 3 (3D remake)
  6. Final Fantasy 2
  7. Final Fantasy 1

If you are wanting to experience the rest, you can get Final Fantasy 9 on PSN and Final Fantasy 10 has a PS3 HD remaster with the sequel included. For Final Fantasy 12 you would have to get the original PlayStation 2 version, unfortunately. Out of these I would definitely recommend Final Fantasy 9, the graphics have aged much better than the other two PS1 games (7 & 8) and its more like the classic Final Fantasies in theme and style (1 through 5).

Just in case, Final Fantasy 11 and 14 are MMORPGs. FF11 is being shut down on consoles as its originally a PS2 era game, but will live on on PC and Mobile. Final Fantasy 14 is the most recent one and got overhauled a couple of years ago. FF14 went from a grand mess into a masterpiece (in my opinion) and is getting its first expansion in June. So if you are looking for an online multi-player experience, now would be the best time to jump in to FF14 (requires a sub, though).

@Verne How can you like FF9?  If it weren't for Vivi I would have completely hated that one.

@OP My favourites are FF6(FF3 on SNES in north America), FF7 and FF8.

FFX and FFXII were pretty good, but a lot of their sidequests are horrific and shameless exercises in tedium.  Were as in FF7 & FF8 sidequests were more interwoven with the main story, or flatout enjoyable in and of themselves.  That said; I don't think I played anything as much as I played FFX's blitzball, and I played A LOT of triple triad(ff8) and snowboarding(ff7).

They're all good games, but they're quite dated now.  If you enjoy slightly different game mechanics, methods of storytelling and can see past the now poor graphics, then start at FF6 and play on up to current.  I skipped X-2, 11, 13-2 and 14 so I can't recommend those at all.  and it's okay if you skip 9.  I wish I did.

Instead of recommending a title in the series I'll just categorize them.

2D:

    Job system:

FF1

FF3

FF5

    non-job:

FF2

FF4

FF6

3D:

    job system:

all the shitty ones

    non-job:

FF12 (the original anyway)

FF7

FF8

FF9

FF10

I might have missed something but in my opinion 6, 7, 9, 10 are great starting points.

7 and 9 haven't aged well but if you don't mind dated graphics they are really great games.
