So as you all know, wireless is not exactly the best option for gaming. Sadly, I will have to deal with it until a later date. My router is just a piece of shit and has to be reset every few hours and is losing performance. I would LIKE to put wired internet in my bedroom were my PC is. So first, my main problem being that my router is in my basement (bad idea I know but it can't really be moved) and my PC is on the 2nd floor (or 3rd if you count the basement as a floor) and is on the opposite side of the house. And, there is another problem. My basement is finished so I can't just run wires around. I have moved my computer down there in the past, but it is not very convenient to have it there. So I don't think that will be an option. HOWEVER, there is a cable line right above my ceiling, which I could easily route into the wall from the attic. But my question is, can I have a modem both at my desk, and in the basement. I am pretty sure you can, I just don't want to screw anything up. Also, I knew this is one of the best ever tech forums on the planet, and I was bound to get answers. Also, I have a 25 port switch in my basement and only use 10 of the ports. OVERKILL

Do you really want a modem in your room? Why not a switch?

I know for sure a switch will work

HOW EXACTLY DO YOU THINK I COULD ROUTE AN ETHERNET CABLE IN THIS SITUATION? Sorry for caps, went on unintentionally and was to lazy to retype.

is that 'line' going to the basement modem or is it a split line from the original wire into the house?

Split line

You may want to contact your isp to see if you have to buy another line or if it can use the one you have already. If it was me I would see about using powerline adpters.

It's not that I can't use wireless, it is that the performance I get from it is terrible. I want to be getting decent speeds.

Oh, I read your situation again and now I understand.

Not sure what that cable in your wall is for, so can't judge.

You can get a Wi-Fi extender but speed will depend on interference and thickness of your house walls amoungst other things.

That is specifically why I WANT TO USE WIRED

Which cable?

You will not be able to use two modems at the same time without having an additional internet connection provided by your ISP.

Your best bet as much as I hate to say it is using the powerline adapters if your house isn't old. OR you could sack up and get the cable run. Try calling some 'handyman' types off craigslist and see if they can give you a ballpark estimate over the phone.
