GTX 970 vs GTX 780 Ti

justinfields

Can someone explain to me why the Nvidia GTX 970 is not as good as the Nvidia GTX 780 Ti?

Isn't the 780 ti is like a smaller gtx titan?

780ti has more cores

What exactly does that mean?  It has a lower clock speed, so what difference does it make?

the gtx 780 ti is equal to the 980 so the 780 ti is more powerful

780ti has more cores

:| I would never use that as a reason unless they are the same architecture then maybe

Because the 980 was sort of an update to the 780 Ti and the 970 was sort of an update to the 770

More so an update to the 780.

I'd go with the 970 because of the architectureal improvements

780 Ti has more cores.

970 has less cores (But it's on Maxwell. I think a Maxwell core is ~1.3 Kepler (780 Ti) cores), which are faster.

Id'e 970.

The 780ti and the (non-reference)R9-290x are on a different tier than the GTX-970. The 780ti is nearly as beastly as the GTX980. The 290x and the 780ti trade blows in a lot of games, but the 780ti comes out on top more often than not.

Doesn't really answer your question of why the Ti is better than the 970. But it really just comes down to what tier each GPU was intended to be in.

I'd still choose the GTX-970 over the 780ti, especially with the current pricing and availability of the Ti.
