I've been offered a gift from one of my family members.  They've offered to buy me a nice bike.

I live in the city currently but my roots belong in my hometown in the mountains.

So I'm looking for a bike that I will use on pavement somewhat but mostly on logging roads, trails, mud, the mountains, offroad ya'know?

I've got a rough price range of 500 - 700 dollars, but the problem is that I haven't got much of a clue about bikes!  I think I want a hardtail bike, only front suspension.

I just don't even know what brands are good, what parts are better, or even where to buy the dang thing

Anybody know more about this than me that could share some insight? Thanks :D

I like to ride bikes.

But if you like being hit by cars be my guest. The amount of horror stories make me avoid going on the road.

Also like @matto97 i have a mountain bike.

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

I was only 9 years old. I loved Fifflaren so much, I had all the NiP merchandise and matches pirated. I prayed to Fifflaren every night before bed. Thanking him for the life I have been given. Fifflaren is love I say. Fifflaren is life. My dad hears and calls me a fuckhead. I knew he was just jelly of my passion for Fifflaren. I called him a Sw@yer. He hits me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now, and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel someone touching me. I feel someone touching me. It's Fifflaren. I am so happy. He whispers in my ear; "this is my pyjama". He grabs me with his powerful Swedish hands and puts me on my hands and knees. I'm ready. I spread my ass cheeks for Fifflaren. He penetrates my butt-hole. It hurts so much but I do it for Fifflaren. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Fifflaren. He roars a viking roar as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Fifflaren looks straight into his eyes and says; "He is a ninja now". Fifflaren is love, Fifflaren is life

@MajorChipHazard Cyclist here :) been road racing since I was 13. I just recently got back into it but it's just a morning habit I'm not racing anymore. And my road bike is pretty old like 4 years? I have a mountain bike but nothing beats the speed and lightness of a road bike.

Hey, you should check out the Specialized Rockhopper, Hardrock, and Pitch.  They are awesome mountain bikes, in my opinion.  Basically the three big brands which all make pretty great bikes are Specialized, Trek, and Giant.  There are many many other bike brands which are smaller, and are still great.  Basically what I would do is find a local bike shop and go and talk to them about how exactly you plan to use your bike.

Absolutely love my rockhopper pro evo. But its a little out of that price range.OP Get a lower tier, try and get SRAM components. And disk breaks are a must.if you want I can pm you some links.

Even that road bike wont be able to touch the acceleration and snappiness of a bmx. Its what i love about the thing, it spins up to speed faster than any bike i have ever ridden. No flex either but thats not something that is the case for all 20s (fucking redlines).

dude that's just acceleration. what's the use of acceleration when the top speed is nowhere near the road bike's?

well in any case you shouldn't compare the two it's apples to oranges

Yes you may have acceleration, but over distance, the road bike will win, with its better gearing and multiple gearing. As well, most road bikes weigh much less then bmx bikes.

I have a friend that wanted to follow me when I went riding and all he had was his bmx bike, the problem was that his gearing would not let him go as fast as me and then his hill climbing ability was poor because he could not get the lower gearing that I had and he had to over come more weight that his bike had.

I did everything on a mountain bike up until a year ago. I have always wanted a road bike but they were too expensive for me. for my birthday my dad bought me a bike, I keep the thing well oiled and I can get some stupid fast speed out of it, as well I can glide for a stupid distance. I don't think ill ever go back to to mtn bikes again.

Oh, im just talking about it from the perspective of how fun it is to ride. I wont deny that it is not as fast over long distance simply because i cant mantain the high cadancde required to keep it at speed (im on a race bike not some dinky thing with a 21t front ring). Also to the point about road bikes being lighter, not really. My dads road bike is a carbon thing with a full dura ace groupset and its heavier (not by much than my alu 20). Once i am done with it it will be much lighter than the road bike with carbon bars, that ballbusting tioga seat and Ti spokes.

Ya, I was not bashing on bmx bikes just to be clear. About the road bikes weight, most of them are light but there are some heavy ones out there. The ones my dad and I ride are very light, mine is around 20lbs and his is 13lbs. but like I said, there are some heavier models out there no doubt about that. I personalty came from a 50lbs monster of a mtn bike and that thing was hell to ride long distance.

I would say that a road bike is not truly light until it breaks the UCI weight limit which your dads one does by a nice amount  to . When it comes to mountain bikes i think anything under 20lbs is light and once you get around the 15lbs mark that's probably pushing it a bit to far(I have seen this before, it was some crazy striped down carbon SS 26er with latex tubes and schwallbe rocket rons). I'm not sure what the cutoff for bmx is when you can start saying that your bike is really light. Im going to see how far i can push mine with my current frame. I have seen 14lbs but I dont think i could beat that without going with the carbon version of my frame which i dont feel like paying for (its double the price).

This is why Vancouver has bike lanes and horrible traffic problems at times.

I like road biking the most. It's a nice way to get around, but I live in a smaller city core so everything is walking/biking distance.

@marioo1182
I dont know about you but
i hate getting cut of by people on bikes and having to slam the brakes on, Or getting stuck behind them in a 50 zone and there going like 20 blocking the road so you cant even get past.... And best of all when your stuck at a red light they ride down the middle and if your up front they stop and lean on your car till the lights go green.

Smaller towns are fine but in cities and inner suburbs of cities bikes should not be on the road, I might be coming off wrong but i am thinking of the bike riders here, Its there life there risking every time they get on the road.
