Is 1GB vRam enough?

C_Mike

I'm thinking of upgrading my Desktop/Server build (http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/bRFxNG),%C2'>

I'm bumping it up to 8GB of RAM, and am going to buy a used graphics card on eBay, I'm looking at GTX 550,650 and 750.

My question is do you think 1GB of vRam is enough for modern games, cause I've only ever had 2GB cards and am worried if I only get a 1GB card, it may inhibit game performance.

But correct me if I am completely and utterly wrong.

1GB is enough for a lot of games, but for more graphically intensive programs you might want one with 2-3... Maybe the 750 ti? Only $20 more than the 750 your looking at.

depends on what resolution you're playing at, what settings and what kinda games.

starbound is modern. (very recent update happened and im addicted x'D )

you can play at 1440p and be fine with 1 or 2 gigs vram.

battle field for on medium settings at 1080p you're gonna choke.

Well, games will run. That said you most certainly won't be maxing out any. I had a 550ti, it was a good card for the price, but it's not exactly a powerhouse. 1gb was proportioned to the gpu, it made sense like that. I would get a 2gb 260x if I were you.

1080 or up you NEED 2gb of vram unless you only play minecraft and counterstrike, anything on a demanding engine will need more

For 1080p it's enough. Anything above that, I would say no.

That's kind of  what I was thinking.

I would but there's not many 750ti s on eBay within my price range.

I will most likely get a 550ti or 650, its only going to be a backup rig really so amaze-balls performance isn't a huge issue.

If you're okay with medium settings then yes, 1GB of VRAM is enough. For example you can play Battlefield 4 at high settings with AA disabled at 1080P with a 1GB card, I've done so with my GTX 560.

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

Ridiculous you guys all criticize the 960 for 2gb but praise the card with 1???

If your buying a 1gb card have fun on www.freeonlinegames.com because that's all your playing 7fps MAX!
