So I am upgrading our "family" PC and I'm looking at buying the Intel G3258 due to its price and great reviews. The PC will be running windows 8, it will not be used for gaming or any high performance programs, just simply web browsing and office programs.

So with that in mind, would I benefit from overclocking the CPU? Does an overclocked CPU provide a performance boost on general everyday applications or is it only with games and high performance applications where a difference can be seen? Would it be worth the possible instability and decreased longevity?

Its debatable because overall you can see a difference in everyday tasks but that only helps if you have a SSD to help it along.

So in the end I would say yes its worth it.

yeah, overclocking the CPU will give you a performance improvement in just about anything you do with the PC, it just depends how much per program

if your temps allow it then sure, why not :)

Also note that you don't necessarily have to do a large overclock, the first GHz from the base speeds can give a large improvement for little thermal output

Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated. I have an old Arctic Freezer 7 Rev 2 lying around which I was planning on using, I'm hoping to be able to get speeds up to 4GHz with a stable build and decent temperature, has anyone had any experience overclocking with the Freezer 7? would it be ok or would I need to invest in something more substantial?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte Z87M-DS3H.

Nevermind, found out the Freezer 7 doesnt fit LGA1150, so looks like ill be buying a new CPU fan.
