Windows Update stuck.

Go to solution Solved by techguru,

you tried to install to many updates at once

it needs a reboot and a cleaning up

and btw ...you really should have slipstreamed the updated into the cd and done a clean install

Hi. I recently picked up a computer that had Windows 7 Home Basic preloaded, so I upgraded it to Windows 7 Professional. I used to have a problem that when I try to go to the Personalization Panel by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Personalize, it would said "Unspecified Error", and if I go to the Control Panel, Personalization is not listed. I have managed to fix that problem. But now, I have a new problem.

I decided to update the system, since it's really clean, no updates (Not even Service Pack 1), no programs, no other crap that you would get. I fired up Windows Update, it detected that I need to install 185 updates, so I pressed Download and Install and then it started downloading the updates. The process was very quick until it reached the part where it started installing. So I left it open and left my house to do some grocery shopping.

I came back from grocery shopping, which took me about 2 hours. I immediately open my monitor and I start looking for some details, what update it's currently installing and other important details. I notice that i's currently installing update the 97th update (KB 2750841) so I left it for a while. After an hour, I decided to check on it once again, and to my surprise, it's still on the 97th update. So I leave it open again and I decided to go out and just have a walk (A walk that lasted for 2 hours)

I came back from my very, very long walk. Checked the update and it's still on the 97th update.

I don't know why it's stuck there. Any suggestions?

I had this problem a couple of times on my laptop, probably not with the same update. I think what will happen is that after a while (can take a long time) it will say that the update failed and it will revert to an old save. Windows will boot (I wasn't that lucky the first few times) and you can install the updates again. You can manually set that update to ignore to prevent future problems.

Alright. I'm going to reboot my system.

And about the upgrade thing. I didn't do a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. I used Windows Anytime Upgrade, bought a key, and then used it there.

So... I restarted my PC. I am now at the Windows 7 screen where I would be prompted to type my password. But instead of showing me that, it says "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 97 of 185...

So it's basically doing the same thing, any suggestions?

button reset..if it takes more then 5 mins

I turned my PC off via the power button, the turned it back on. I was expecting it to say "Failure Configuring Updates, Reverting Back" just like what @Wauthar said. But no, it's actually configuring my updates and shutted down while it was around 30%. I don't know if it's a good sign but I'm gonna wait.

installing that many updates never works on windows

Ive seen windows stall on updating many many times..and its usually cause someone is installing to many at once...or they have a program on the pc interferring with the updates

Alright. Managed to reboot my PC. And now it's installing updates once again. 181 updates. Wish me luck.

Edit: It's not 181. It started installing on update 95.
