No, you need them in most cases. Some boards can run without them, but most can't until you install the driver from the disc.

 

OTHER drivers are a different case. Don't install chipset/onboard video drivers, and don't install bloatware.

No download all your drivers, Slick probably means avoid the bloatware apps that can be bundled with your drivers as optional (like Asus AIsuite and there lan optimization software that actually increases latency). 

 

Also dont use the ones on the disk always get the latest from your manufacturer website.

I dont use there lan optimization but I do like AI suite

I avoid it all because I feel it slows down your whole system, I have seen some people complain that there boot times increase quite a bit after its installed & to uninstall it you need to use a special downloaded tool from Asus to "fully" remove it.

I DID say to avoid the random manufacturer specific networking applications because they tend to cause more problems then they fix

Sorry @Slick thanks for the clarification now that i that i think about it I remember you saying that about the networking applications
