GTX 960 vs 970

Go to solution Solved by david cassar,

Is the 970 better performing than the 960 4GB?

It oculd be just me being dumb, but look at the specs:

Is it worth getting 970 over 960?

Yes very much so. A 970 is actually as fast as two 960s if not faster in some cases. Also the 4gb won't be utilized because they will be bottlenecked by the 128 bit memory bus of the 960.

Basic guide to CPU's!

If I said I were 14, you would call me a kid. If I say 70, you’ll entitle me too old. If I say 20 you say I’m inexperienced and if I say 40 than I'm too boring.

Yes, a 970 performs much better than the 960. Look at the benchmark charts in Linus' video.

It oculd be just me being dumb, but look at the specs:

That table isn't really showing you the important stuff (aside from maybe memory bus width).

You'd be better off comparing framerates instead, but if you really want to compare technical specifications you need to look at the number of shader cores, texture units, and ROPs (there's such a table on this site). Even that is shaky and abstract, and only applicable at all because both use very similar architectures.

In short, The 970 is a anomaly of a card even with the 3.5G thing the AMD boys posting about, For its price its a EPIC card, haven't seen anything since the first Ti mid range cards came along and gave us boarderline top level performance at mid(ish) prices.

@Stijncat

Specs don't give you the full picture. Look up benchamrks for better information.

This is true for all products, not just computer componets. Spec sheets provide two functions.

1. They give you the most basic info (for the customer)

2. They provide a place to market bullshit (foe the company)

The effectiveness of both these points depends on the knowledge of the person reading the sheet. A common example of this can be found in computer monitors. Dynamic contrast ratio is probably the most bullshit spec you will come across. Response time is up there too (although its bull because there is no standard for the spec. i.e. everyone makes up their own)
