WD velocaraptor

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I haven't seen one of these for years, do they still make these drives or with SSDs being so affordable now a days are velocaraptor drives pretty much just a novalty item now?

Hey Ynkeeblood9,

The latest version of WD VelociRaptor is still a great drive for high-performance workstations and works significantly faster than WD Black (about 50MB/s - 60MB/s read/write speed faster). As a HDD it still has some benefits over SSDs such as much easier data recovery in case the drive crashes and still cheaper per GB. There are a lot of people that prefer mechanical drives in their systems and this is a great choice for high-deployment workstations. Here's the spec sheet of the latest WD VelociRaptor: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=q4k8V2

To be honest, the most beautiful drive for me was the WD Raptor X :) I still keep one for a future build with a very open case :)

Captain_WD.

They are a novelty item and outdated, SSDs offer much better performance and are a little bit more expensive(velociraptors cost more than traditional hard drives though) but the speed difference more than makes up for it.

Yeah, they're still made: http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=20

But with SSDs getting cheaper and being significantly faster their use cases

are indeed getting rather limited these days (I still have one and use it

as a scratch disk for temporary storage, works very well).

Well the drive is good and fast, it tends to make more noise than regular drives and is a 10,000 rpm. :) It's up to you if it's worth the price or not. I would be good for a boot drive or storing more demanding applications or for working with larger files. I personally would love to have a 5xxx, a 7xxx, a 10xxx and a 15xxx rpm drives all in one case plus a SSD just for the sake of having them and experimenting, but that's me. :)
