At the time of booting up my computer, my ram is already at 20% usage, and that does not add up as I have 16GB of ram. This will go up to ~95%+ when leaving my computer on sleep for a few days. But in most cases my ram usage gets above 70-80% when playing any game, and I need to restart after only a few hours of being on. I ran Malwarebytes, and it seems that a virus is not the problem. The task manager also has some inconsistencies about my ram:

Any help with diagnosing, or solving this problem is much appreciated, as I am at a loss of what to do.

RAM usage isn't necessarily bad, hell its there, it may as well be made use of. What games were you playing when this occurs? Also, chrome is a memory hog with multiple tabs open.

25% usage is normal. Windows itself will take bigger portion of ram if you have more of them. I have a 8GB machine and OS takes 1gb and have 36GB workstation it takes 5GB idle. 70-80% is big no no if you have no software opened. If you left your computer with chrome tabs maybe huge photoshop file it will be normal.

Ya, so at idle being 20% makes sense in that first picture there.

20% of your RAM is around 3 Gigs

only adding the google chrome stuff in the pic is a little over 1 gig. Not sure what else you have down that list that could add up though.

Also, why you cut off the list item in the next pic? You said any game, do all the games you play use mods?

How much RAM does WIndows recognize? Search for "Show how much RAM" and it should come up in the search.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

Windows says I have 16.0 GB of memory

I sorted the task manager by ram usage, and chrome was the only thing using >100mb

& I cut some stuff out of the screenshot because it had my personal email, there was nothing else there besides that.

And I do not usually use mods.

I do not use photoshop, or any other ram hogging application usually, its just chrome or some games, minus some programming that I do, but that usually does not take up much ram at all.

No specific game, happens with a lot of them.

Also let me clarify, the ram usage doesn't add up to what is actually being used. For example I only have a few chrome tabs open, and I am already at 5+ GB of ram used.

And the usage doesn't go down much at all if I just closed all of the chrome tabs. It'll only go down the ~1GB that it's using.

Very Weird! Before doing anything else I would do a memory test, to make sure it is all functioning properly, using some free software called memtest. http://www.memtest86.com

Chrome will eat your ram and not give it back to you sometimes, also you don't need to restart, just log out and log back in.

Or, when you see your ram at 90-ish% open the task manager to see which process is using most of your ram.

The stars died for you to be here today.

Honestly, looking at 20% while idle isn't too much when it comes to the OS. I do have to say, Chrome does like to use much of your RAM just to hold a bunch of unnecessary stuff for you, Juuuusssstt in case you EVER access it again. I recommend Firefox or Torch if you want to try seeing if using a new browser helps conserve RAM.

also, did you install webcrawler/similar PC stressors, by any chance? software like this can really wreck your resources, and needs to be rid of from your computer.

The only stresser I have is MSI kombustor, and I doubt that is what is causing it.

For me my ram doesn't clear unless you hold down power button on the case (shutdown on windows menus does not shut it down for some reason) or by doing a restart (which works).

It is normal to use that amount of RAM, but to help, simply try to eliminate any unused startup programs, and check to see if any stupid resources are being used. this has a habit of eating away at RAM.

Do you have all the updates for windows? I just found this that has a patch for games using full RAM while playing games. :http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-gaming/windows-81-x64-low-memory-while-playing-full/e4602805-a1e1-4704-b006-92f43247b9e8

If it isn't this, then I am stumped for now. I find no issue with the RAM at %20, being the OS has reserved RAM and Chrome likes to eat its part of the "cake"

I have all the lastest updates and drivers, and the 20% wasn't the issue, I was talking about how it got up to 70%+ and would not drop from that unless I hard reset it, or restarted it.

What is using all the memory? have you pinpointed the process that causes the spike.

Also, this person had the problem, so see if you have either of these to uninstall...http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-7-high-ram-usage-after-some-time/a922a0ed-475f-4577-974f-4859f5b1a394

Memory usage at pretty much idle with only 1 chrome tab open: http://gyazo.com/deb32ff098218a2d8b0a9a9268ca97e8

Also these numbers confuse me as they do not add up at all: http://gyazo.com/ebb696a933afdf0b91ac0752258306bc

Does it happen with all games?

I haven't tested to see what games specifically do it, but it seems to happen often enough that it isn't just one game.

i have this problem too when running windows, you can lower this by disabling various programmes, or setting some programmes not to start on boot, but either to start manually or delayed start, you should find that in the local services in system settings,

skype is one of these programmes the starts automatically and doesnt need to.

hope this helps

ps, windows is very resource heavy, so that doesnt help either

Doesn't task manager has an option to show you all the processes?, like in W7.

Is this what you mean?:

http://gyazo.com/7d7b701c406502fad3fb3e38d51bd408

But as you can see the ram usage has gone up significantly, and I don't have anything open but a few chrome tabs, steam, and task manager. No games, and nothing else that would be ram intensive, yet it says 90% of ram is being used. Chrome only uses ~1GB if I add up all its processes.
