Should I choose z97 or x99?

Hello,

I asked for help on this last week, but no one had anything to say about it.

I've noticed over the past month that DDR4 is becoming more affordable and microcenter has a great deal for the i7 5920k, I plan on doing gaming, recording, and streaming with this build.

anything else you might want to know is here:

Aim:

This build is for gaming, streaming, and a general all-purpose system. I'll definitely be overclocking this as far as it'll go who doesn't with water cooling though?

Monitors:

Okay, on the list I have a 3 monitor arm. I do intend on having a 3 monitor set up in the future. However, 3 monitors cost a lot so I'll be staggering their purchase by about 6 months each. They're 1080p 144 Hz refresh rate BenQ monitors. I do, however, have a 1080p 60Hz 22 inch monitor I'd use before I upgrade to the BenQ monitors.

Peripherals:

As of right now I have the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate and Kraken 7.1, I plan on getting the Deathadder mouse but changing out my headset for the Asus Strix headset unless anyone can recommend a better pair.

Now with that out of the way here are two lists I've made

Depends what you plan on using. Look at the different features and decide which one has the most attractive ones for youself. Motherboards dont affect system performance that much so this decision wont make or break your system

the x99 ddr4 will always give better performance and it is up to you if you think it is worth it or not. The difference is not that great and DDR3 is still perfectly capable of doing 3D video editing and redering

I would go with the x99 just because I just upgraded to x99 also and im not disappointed, thats if the money is not an object... However! I had a 4790k previously and I don't really see much difference in performance other than rendering videos.

Normally I would say to go with Z97 if it's just a gaming build, but since the overall price difference is only ~$250 (less than 10%), there isn't really any major reason (that I can think of) to not go with the X99 system.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

For gaming, especially on a 1080 monitor Z97 would be better. The i7-4790K has a significantly higher clock speed and few games can take advantage of the extra hyperthreads offered by X99 cpu.

If you don't mind blowing another 200 bucks, go X99, be a little more future-proof for like another year or so

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

I actually choose the gaming 9 ack knowing it wasn't the cheapest but it has an avermedia capture card in it that doesn't impact performance when streaming.

DDR4 memory prices are fine and so is the CPU, but if that motherboard price is representative of the rest of the X99 motherboard market.... then holy shit.

I still vote X99. The extra cost for it isn't a very large percentage of the rest of the system. It's just a couple hundred more on a bill that's already nearly $3000.

Get modern tech. No buyer's remorse.

Most x99 motherboards are the cream of the crop, so they're all really expensive.

The 5820k can be overclocked to that speed

Buying x99 but not overclocking is a crime!

Believe it or not, i7-4790K can also be overclocked.

X99 contributes little to gaming and then only at the bleeding edge. X99 is not newer tech than Z97. In fact Z97 will get the next generation of cpu long before X99 gets them.

Instead of going X99, the money would be better spent improving the gpu.

I know that all k series chips can be overclocked

And if money is no object it's okay to go with x99

Never said X99 was not ok, just that it would be sub-optimal in this instance.
