So, I finally got my mom up and running on her new computer, and my sister wants to use the old computer as her own. She can of course, use it as it is now, but it quite honestly just sucks as it sits, with all that HP bloatware. (also, we don't have the reformat disc that came with it anymore)

So I was thinking, why not use one of the two windows install discs I have laying around (one from my rig, and one from the new one), and when it comes time to verify the install online, use the windows Product Key that came with the HP installation of windows 7?

Is this possible?

It might work. Windows keys are tied to the version of windows they come with (home premium only works with home premium keys). As long as that is the case it theoretically should work. If it doesn't work immediately, try using the over-the-phone method, it usually works better.

As far as I know, both are home premium 64 bit versions.

I'm not guaranteeing anything, mainly because I've had so much trouble with Windows keys in the past, but you could probably do that.

I feel you there, I can't stand how small they are written, always have trouble with 0 and O, B and 8, etc.

It'll work. I did it to my grandma's HP and it's still happy. After a week it wanted me to call up MS to verify, and that all went smoothly.

Really, I meant that using a code given to me won't work using the default method, but works with the over-the-phone method. Or something like the code flat-out not even working and having to get a new one. I understand that microsoft wants to make sure nobody is pirating their product, but damn they make it so hard for people that pay for it, making an unintentional incentive for people to pirate.

I'll give it a try once we get anything off of the old PC that they want to keep.

use the windows Product Key that came with the HP installation of windows 7?

By that, do you mean using a software(like KeyFinder from magical jelly bean) to obtain the key currently used by HP on the Windows 7 installation? If so, it won't work. That key is a generic one for OEM manufacturers

If you mean the key under/on the side of the computer, on a sticker, that should work yes. It may not during the actual install process though and when it comes to activating windows from within it may also not want to activate, but a quick (5 minutes) call to the number they tell you should solve that.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Bazzite

I mean using a barebones install disc that I bought from newegg to install, and then using the product ID key off of the side of the computer, which did not come with that specific disk.
