r9 280x vapor-X or r9 280x Tri-X

Both are absolutely amazing cards. I have the Tri-X and couldn't recommend it enough.

Alternitively, you could spend a few dollars more and get a beast 970...

By the way, welcome to the forums!!!

I am trying to replace my R7 260x with something else from GTX or Radeon but I don't know what would be best for gaming. I made my computer http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/ and found a graphics card that looks worth it's price http://tinyurl.com/l9hn6aw. Also I think the graphics card may be the problem with the computer but the CPU is what is heating up and not working properly, so I am wondering if a water cooled CPU would fix that because I can feel the heat from outside the case.

Probably best to cough up an extra 20-30 and get a 970 in my opinion you will be better with that.

Great Choice. Bump up to an 280x or 285 and you will be super happy.

280x is better than 285 with the same price tag :P

285 does support free sync though while the 280x does not. In case that was something he ever wanted down the line.

ehhh. Free-sync isnt that big of a market thats why the 280x far outsold the 285. As games develop and become more optimized, tearing will be less of an issue. but that could be years away, so whatever yours or others' personal preference might be, I prefer the 280x just due to the performance difference

Edit: @Deathikilled121 a part list of your PC would be helpful thanks

GOOD GOD, YOUR PC HAS THE EXACT SAME PARTS AS MY BUDGET GAMING RIG. STRAIGHT DOWN TO THE BONE.

Anywho, I'd recommend getting a 970 ITX

https://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn970ixoc4gd

I'd cough up the extra 20 bucks for one hell of a card.

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

I've no idea if you willing to buy second hand at all but if you are I suggest you check out Reddit's /r/hardwareswap

I picked up a 5 month used Asus 280x for $120 + $10 shipping and works flawlessly. Yeah it's used but it'll last me for a few years and I saved a ton.

Wow that's an amazing discount, I'll look at that.

I would go with the vapor-x 280x, nothing else. Vapor-x is the best cooler on the market to date, and the 280x works like a charm

@cthomas1489 I also got my 280x used, but on eBay for $175 + shipping from Canada. How did you get yours so cheap?

Buy used and get a 970 or 290x. The 280x used should be around $170: they're not worth more than that. A used 970 or 290x would be around $300. I'm sure you can find a much better deal using Craigslist/eBay.

Tips on finding deals:

-misspell the name of the card and look at "time ending soonest"

-haggle on Craigslist

-watch for low "buy it now" prices on eBay. Users sometimes post too quickly and make a typo and you end up winning.

-ask your friends if they know anyone selling a video card for cheap

The guy just upgraded to a GTX 980 and was getting rid of it. Original box and all. Said he didn't mine on it and I tend to believe him since GPU mining hasn't been profitable for awhile. Just got lucky. /r/hardwareswap does see them go for $140-$150 pretty often though

Thats a pretty sweet deal
