why back-light is in a keyboard?

to light up the keys when it's dark so you can see them (if your looking while typing)....

 

so when to use it? - when it's dark ;/ 

 

if it's wireless - use it rarely, battery will die much faster

if it's on a wire - use it when it's dark.. you will save energy :)

 

I think the predominant reason backlighting exists is for aesthetics rather than functionality, although there are cases when it is actually useful.

Yes and no in the early days people used it to see the keys because it was very common to gaming in pitch black for some reason, which by the way guys is actually hard on your eyes.
