I've been wanting to build a system similar to my first PC, but better. My first PC was a 733MHz Coppermine PIII with a 64MB Radeon card and 512MB RAM. Went along with your standard old people's faded yellow CRT and keyboard/mouse. Sadly it went after we cleaned out the basement several years ago. (Along with all the other PII and PIII stuff.) I recently bought a PIII motherboard and 700MHz Katmai (The cartridge type) CPU for $20. (Some guy I know who got it from his grandpa.) I asked my grandparents (Who are moving soon) if I could have some of their old PC stuff. (He used to have a Tandy. He got rid of it, but kept a lot of the software and stuff.) I got a ton of old software and games and some hardware. He also gave me my grandmas old Dell Celery (AKA Celeron) PC. 2.6GHz Celeron, 2GB DDR, 80GB HDD, Win XP Home. Basic grandma PC with upgraded RAM. My grandpa called me and said that I could clean up the Celery and give it to him in return for the PIII Gateway desktop he still uses for making blueprints and CAD. (Don't worry, he has a Lenovo laptop. I should see if superfish is on it..) The Gateway is a 500MHz, probably Katmai, 128MB RAM and has never had internet hooked up to it that I know of. I decided to throw in my old LCD monitor as the Gateway is on an old CRT and the Celery monitor is a tiny LCD. I would have put one of my old AGP GPUs into the Celery but it didn't have a slot and for some reason I can't find my trustworthy old P4 Asus board. (Or any P4 without bent pins for that matter, which means the Celery is staying a Celery.)

Now, I could put in one of my old Nvidia or 64MB ATI cards and keep it really old school or I could throw in one of my newer AGP cards. (I have a Geforce 7300GT, 7600GS, and FX 5900. Not sure which is the best, actually.) I'll put in my 80GB 7200RPM Samsung drive. (AKA 'ol reliable.) and probably 98se. Maybe dual boot 98se and 2k. (I had 2k on my first PC.)

Updates tomorrow when I get my grandpas PIII. The box includes stuff like a very small HDD (Probably from Tandy) and oooold expansion cards. (Again, Tandy.) Also Wolfenstein.

No speakers and no monitor and no keyboard and no mouse... If I can get a CM Storm Devastator bundle, I'll pair my PS/2 Dell keyboard I use with my main rig up with it and then I'll use a Dell mouse with an adaptor.

Looks fun!

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

Oh. Whatever.

I got a bunch of the old stuff I could find from the basement. Games, RAM sticks, expansion cards, fans, a floppy drive, HDDs, disk drive, etc. Getting the Gateway in awhile, the mobo/CPU tomorrow, and hopefully some brand new $5 cases from Craigslist soon.

May or may not add another card and/or replace the Voodoo with something more up to date.

Ok, so it's together. Only problem is that it uses a weird sized PSU so I have to use the stock 200w for now. Also it doesn't seem to support 512MB of RAM. Hopefully getting new case tomorrow, and other mobo may fix the RAM issue.

Got new mobo and CPU from an idiot who packaged it all with Walmart plastic bags. No esd bags or anything. Board is completely dead but at least the 700mhz CPU works.

Board in the Gateway doesn't support 512MB+ so it's running 320MB. (2x128 and 1x64) Also got my Geforce x5900 working. Installing 98se.

Case guy never showed up and later texted asking why I didn't call him or whatever. (Really? We made plans for a set time and place and he still wanted a call?) So I'm stuck with the Gateway case which means I'm stuck with the 200w stock PSU.

  • 3 weeks later...

Welp, I modded the PSU fan to run quieter by splicing it into the 5v rail. While testing it before fully putting it back together I tried to move the top piece so I could feel the airflow and there was a spark. The fuse is blown. The board is fine, confirmed with different PSU. I have 3 options:

  • Hack out the back of the case to fit in a normal size PSU (Don't wanna)
  • Replace fuse with some metal to test
  • Find correct fuse

Wat do.
