Hi

A friend of mine asked me to put a good game-pc together and I said that I'll look to make a good build and I'll ask forums to give me also advice.

His budget is 1700 euro (or 2000 dollar) MAX, wants to play on 1920x1080 highest settings possible, he's a gamer so i7 isn't necessary, he's not going to overclock (at least I think), he has all the peripherals...

feel free to choose what case and fans, as long as it's not that expensive ;)

CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.4GHz (cooled by Corsair H110) Motherboard: ASUS Maximus VI Formula RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 | GPU: ASUS GTX780TI-DC2OC-3GD5 Case: NZXT Phantom 630 Storage: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB + 3 x WD Black 500GB  + WD Black 1TB + WD Black 2TB + Kingston V300 120GB PSU: SeaSonic Platinum 660W Monitors: 3 x Iiyama ProLite XU2390HS-1 Keyboard: Logitech G910 Orion Spark Mouse: Logitech G502 Protheus Spectrum Mousemat: Steelseries QcK Heavy (40x45) Headset: Kingston HyperX Cloud II Speakers: Logitech Z906

Also, anyone who has a different build, please post it here, so he has to choice ;)

Silverstone RV02

Gigabyte Z77x-UD5H

i5-3570k

cheapo random 1333mhz ram (corsair preferably)

GTX 770 SLI (reference coolers just came out)

ax860i

2x Samsung 840 pro

Hyper 212

I recommend that RV02 for air cooling graphics cards because its quiet and gives the best temps with blower-design cards. 770s because dual 780s is overkill for 1 60hz 1080p monitor. 3570k because pure gamers don't need an i7, I recommend 8GB of 1333mhz, again because he is just gaming. The ud5h is a good board that supports 2 cards, dual SSDs for super fast boot speed, and the hyper 212 is quiet and gets the job done.

I didn't include links because I don't know where you shop. I recommend Amazon.

This is a good choice, just I would say skip on the overkill ram and get a bigger SSD.

I'd rather go for something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1dAwl

Personally, the 200-300$ premium the 780 has over the 770 isn't worth the few extra frames (only 5 fps in bioshock infinite. I wouldn't say 5 fps is worth 200$ imo.), Money would be much better spent having two SSDs in RAID 0 as a main drive.  Also, I changed the RAM for 8GB of the 2133MHz one. Also, everything matches in a red/black theme.

Hope this helps!

-François

P.S.: Caleb, I don't know who you are but you added a sound card in there, therefore, you're awesome. After SSDs, this is probably the best thing you can buy for a PC >1500$ :P

WD red drives are supposed to be for NAS applications. If you want an internal drive, you should pick a black/green/blue drive.

Well if the budget is $2000 and you can't throw in a sound card then there is something wrong.

i know but that just means that they are more reliable and since they are not that much more expensive they are a good choice even for gaming systems...

Ok, guys

First of all thank you for responding so quick, it took me a while before I could see them because the server was down for a very long time?

Quick update: He only has a mouse, so in the budget I need also a good monitor, a keyboard and maybe headset.

Also I forgot to ask him how much storage he wants and if he wants SSD or HDD, I think he'll choose for Windows 7 but I don't know for sure, I'm going to ask him to choose his case already so that that is already out of the budget for the parts,...

I'll ask him all these questions tomorrow and I will post the answers here as soon as I can.

Best regards from Belgium! ;)

Ok, he wants 128GB SSD and 500 GB HDD, the budget of the build lowered to +-1600 euro or 1900 dollar, he doesn't want any special case as long as it has a nice look... SO I was thinking on going with this, based on the suggestions you all gave me?

Looks good BUT: Thermal paste won't really make a difference in temps and it's going to be a pain to remove the pre-applied one on the h100i, then apply the new one. It's just a lot of work for pretty much nothing. Also, I'd go for an 840 non-pro SSD, your friend is going to save a couple of euros and he'll never be able to tell the difference. And lastly, i hope he is buying the Dominator Platinum only for the looks because this RAM is expensive for nothing (says the guy who has Platinum in his own system XD)

P.s.: if it is possible for your friend to do that, he should probably go for a 240+GB SSD, the lower end sata 6 ones run for about 150€ and every friend that I know who owns a 120 gb ssd has ran out of space or would like to have more space.

You two have fun building this ;P

Oh and I just saw that he needs a keyboard/screen. Uhm well right off the top of my head, for keyboard, you could look at the BlackWidow(but some people have reported having issues in them) or the cheaper CoolerMaster keyboards, those have really good value.

For screens, that, there are soooo many choices, just look at what's in your price range from your suppliers and check for rviews by owners or reviewers online. It also depends on what your friend wants too.

And for headsets, take a look at the Siberia V2(used to have one, its really comfortable and sound is good for the price), or you can also look at the Vengeance 1300/1500 from Corsair, my friend has a 1500 and everything (games, movies and music) sounds fairly good on it.

as people say, the thermal paste on the h100i is high quality. it's not worth the extra money.

Edit: also, you may want to go for a higher watt PSU. something like a 650w PSU. who knows maybe your friend wants to SLI or puts something that requires extra power.

Edit: also, you may want to go for a higher watt PSU. something like a 650w PSU. who knows maybe your friend wants to SLI or puts something that requires extra power.

He doesn't have the budget yet to do SLI so... But if you know a PSU around the same price of 650W, please let me know ;)
