So I just revived a dead XPS 420 with my brand new power supply for my build, and I was looking at the specs and it has a q6600. I'm just wondering how good this chip is today? For gaming? Upgrade path? Socket?

Older quad core. Still a decent budget chip. Linus was using one in his scrapyard wars IIRC

I would revive it. Not just for the reasons in Scrapyard Wars - But that video did explain some of the same reasons why I say go ahead and use it.

Performs like an underclocked current AMD quad core. Still decent for gaming but it will limit performance in newer AAA titles

If your motherboard does not allow overclocking, you still can..

Google q6600 BSEL mods.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

It's a decent chip but don't expect it to be on the same level as modern quad cores. As far as gaming goes it can run a fairly modern games probably low to medium depends on a game really. Upgrade path is non existant in a mainstream world, you would have to find something second hand. Socket is LGA775 dead for mainstream but I think that ASRock still makes a new 775 MOBOs.

I'm half tempted to throw together my old shuttle with a Q6600 and a spare 7950 I have kicking around to see how it benches against my main rig.

I wish I had a Q6600 fall into my lap to upgrade my son's old pc which has an e5200 or e5300. As for what you can game at max. on it well it would depend on the video card paired with it.  The socket for that chip is 775 btw.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

I managed to dig out a picture of the motherboard and 2 things stand out to me:

  1. There are a lot of capacitors very close to the socket - which seems to be oriented diagonally;
  2. There are mounting holes in a rectangular pattern so you really might struggle to find an aftermarket cooler that will line up with the mounting holes and clear the capacitors;
