Yes its deffently possible, I got my R9 280 to 1250 core and 1850 memory.

Hey guys, I'm not too familiar with how to overclock, but I was curious if it was possible to overclock the 280 to 280x levels? Is that possible? Thanks a lot guys.

 

Yes. a 280 can clock up to a 280X, but a 280X will clock faster than a 280 can.

not to mention the 280x's core count advantage. you can overclock the 280 to match the clock speeds but that won't give the same performance. its a good card and can overclock well though.
