The 290 Costs less, but runs hotter and louder.

The 970 Costs more, but runs cooler and quieter.

The 970 is also a bit more powerful than the 290.

Radeon is AMD, GeForce is NVIDIA.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

They are completely different Other than they are both GPU's.

The 290 is warmer and uses more power, but actually has 4GB of usable VRAM.

The 970 is cooler and uses less power, but has a memory problem with the last 0.5GB.

Personally:

290 if you're going 1440p+ and GTX 970 for 1080p.

But it really depends on what games you do too

The GTX 970 is more powerful than the R9 290 in most ways; though the R9 290x where I live is less (CAD $) than the GTX 970 and if I were to buy something in that price range I'd personally buy the 290x instead of a 970; though if you're looking only between those two graphics cards the GTX 970 is better in almost every way.

If you dont get a stock cooler (why does everyone compare stock coolers?) the 290 doesn't run any louder or hotter.

The R9 290 won't output less heat because you put a better cooler on it.

Both are good, theres many ways to it tho,

Price: 290 is cheaper

Performance in certain games: Almost

Power Consumption: 970 is better.

If money isn't a issue and you only plan on 1080p gaming, get the 970.

Basically what the above people said. 290 is cheaper for similar performance, but it uses power power.

If you have a decent power supply then get the 290.
