So I was trying to decide whether to go AMD or Nvidia for my next build, and the card budget I have was 350-400. I would like to know however which brand has the better performance for this price point.  Not trying to start an argument; I'm just curious.

Thanks.

P.S this is the build it is for- http://pcpartpicker.com/p/x2ZDXL

The GTX 970 and R9 290X are both very good GPU's in this price range.

The GTX 970 usually runs cooler and makes less noise, but still is just as powerful as the 290X (usually the 970 is better at 1080p).

The 290X is a tiny bit less expensive though and is certainly a good card

And it actually has 4GB of usable VRAM, Kappa

Well an r9 290x is going to be a little faster than a 970 and be cheaper. However the 970 is going to be more quiet, runs cooler, and probably last longer.

Go with an R9 290 and get yourself a better power supply. The EVGA G1 is not a great unit. The G2 is the one you want to get.

A bit overkill, but the 1000G2 is currently only five bucks more then the 750G2, and gives you much more headroom to add a second 290/X in the future for CrossFire.
