Ok forgive me for this please forgive my ignorance. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102062

I just bought this card. now it says that it is Pci express x1. I have a Asus z97 motherboard can i install this in one of the pci express 8x slots? im talking about the long 8x slot. or do i have to use one of the small pci 1x slots? my goal if possible is to install this as far from my graphics card as possible. i would like to put it in the very bottom slot just abouve the power supply. Once again forgive my ignorance.

Yes.

The other bit though... the built in sound on that Z97 is going to be equal if not better than that card.

The quality of sound on the board is awesome. it just doesnt have any volume. i only use headphones and i like to be able to crank it up and leave my headphones laying on my desk. so hopefully this card allows that.

Is there a specific reason that you bought a soundcard?

Not enough volume. wanted an amp.

You probably should have gotten an external amp, so if you can cancel order/return it, but if not, it should be fine.

Ah i dont think ill return it. the headphone amp should work great.(I hope). If not leason learned. But i really dont see a reason why it wouldn't double the volume i am getting now if not more.

How about because it might not be any different electronically than the sound on your motherboard?

Well the card says it has a 600 ohm amp on it. the Gigabyte board i pulled out for this one had twice the volume coming out of the headset. and thats all im looking for is more sound not better. i can adjust the rest to suit my needs. I mean the volume on the Asus board is low. Low enough that you can sit through anything you want fully cranked and not be bothered.

To be clear, the impedance (600 Ohms, etc.) has pretty much nothing to do with how loud it makes your headphones/speakers. Most good speakers have an impedance of ~4 Ohms, and they can require HUGE power from amps to be the right volume. Anyway, you would probably be better off in the future getting an amp. They don't really change the sound, they just make it louder.

Any of these would have made it just as loud as your new card (provided it's louder) or been much, much louder, for pretty much the same price plus you can have friends listen in too! (added bonus, lol)

Well just put the sound card in and the 600ohm amp has about 10 times the sound coming out of the speakers. i can literally hear them down stairs. maybe something is screwy with the sound on my board i dont know. all i know is the headphone amp on this card kicks but. Took a few minutes with the eq to equal the quality of my Asus board but now i am happy. thanks for all your input everyone.
