OK so right now i can afford an i5 4690k with a hyper 212 evo and a z97 mobo but get a 280x and upgrade gpu in 2 years

or i can get a i5 4460 and get a gtx 970 right now. Considering i am upgrading in two years and i run on a 60hz 1080p monitor, is it better to go with the solid cpu and a slightly worse gpu?

CPU-i5 4690k 4.4ghz @ 1.190V, MOBO-MSI z97 gaming 3, Cooler-hyper 212 evo, GPU- r9 290x asus directcuII (-37Mv), Storage-120gb v300(switching soon), 1tb caviar blue, CASE-Red/black h440, PSU-Antec TPC 650.

Get the gtx 970 and i5 4460. Games are more graphic dependent than cpu dependent. And even then the i5 4460 and i5 4690k are very similar cpus. Oh and btw the i5 4460 is also a solid cpu. The difference between the gtx 970 and r9 280x however is pretty big considering that the 970 is 40% faster than the 280x.

The chance that your GPU will be too weak for 1080p 60fps in two years is bigger than the chance that your CPU will be too weak.

So 4460 + 970.

4460 + 970.

CPU's are cheaper than GPU's.

Get an i7 or unlocked i5 in a few years, or by then you'll have another platform to build anyway to use your 970 on.

4460 is VERY capable anyway.

Overclocking is worthless IMO.

Get up to 20-30% on top..worthless?

Maybe you don't like power consumption rises and whatnot, but it's not worthless, esp for video encoding purposes or anything where your at 100% load.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

honestly for gaming get the 970, that cpu will be more than enough to run games and feed the graphics card. gaming performance is pretty much bottlenecked by the gpu so long as the cpu is decent (and that cpu is great for gaming) so you might as well get the biggest bottle you can.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB
