R9 290X / GTX 970

Erik4boss

So I can get the Sapphire R9 290X with Tri X cooling, or I can get a GTX 970 EVGA for a few hundred SEK more ($20-$30)

I live in Sweden and these were the best deals I could find ($390 for R9 and $~420 for GTX 970)

I was thinking of using a core 3300 with it, with no extra fans.

In a Core 3300 with no extra fans, I'd get a 970. It's a lot easier to keep cool, and the savings you get buying a 290X would probably have to be used to buy a few more fans or a better case in order to manage all the extra heat.

I'll answer your question with a question. What games do you play? If most of your games say "The way its meant to be played" at the beginning then you should probably go with the 970.

290X EZ does it, it can even run games at 4K Low, Med settings, where 970 will choke itself with 3.5 gigs.

290x all the way.

The performance difference between the two at 1080p is irrelevant.  But at higher resolutions the 290x catches up and even surpasses the 970.  Take a look at some of these benchmarks and you can see how the two stack up.

Quite simply, the performance between these two cards is close enough that you should go with the cheaper one unless you really need gsync or something.
