So after nearly 5 years of useage my old i7 920 needs an upgrade. So far I have my eyes on the Asus Rampage V Extreme, i7 5930k and 980 in SLI but my problem is that I have no idea what case that would be a good choice for this, specifically becuase the Asus Rampage board is an EATX board.

So far I've looked at CM HAF X which didn't appeal to me all that much and Corsair 780T which also isn't my type of case.

I am pretty much done with the parts I want. I am just not sure if theres a good case for this to fit in. I plan on using aircooling specifically a Noctua NHD15 for the CPU.

Thanks in advance

I PERSONALLY love the Cosmos II for my flagship rigs. I just did an X99 build, but it wasn't a flagship, so I went with a 500r

The projects never end in my line of work.

Yes I am, movie editing and 3D rendering for work mostly.

My issue is that Cosmose II is insanely expensive......It's pretty much twice the price of the CM Storm Trooper. I would be open to changing boards so I can get the case I want but in return I will not get the motherboard I want. I am trying hard here to look around but a Swedish site called "Sweclockers.com" reviewed the CM Storm Stryker and in that review they are using the Asus Rampage IV Extreme (Which is if im not misstaken also an EATX board) this would mean that a CM storm trooper would fit the Asus Rampage V extreme.

But I haven't seen any official confirmation that it does support EATX.

Well, the Cosmos II will support literally any board you want... I have a dual cpu board in one.

And why do you need a rampage V for professional work?

Not only for professional work. I do like to be able to overclock allot.

But the Cosmos II is an option only it's price is insanely high.

I wish there were another choice that would work fine as well. I plan on using a 5930k, 16-32 gigs of ram. Not sure what type of RAM i need to be able to get the Noctua NHD15 with dual heatsinks in there though. I most likely will have to either use low profile RAM or try to find high profile ram that doesnt have any flaschy cooling.

900D is another good one.

Overclocking on a main work rig is not something I'd be very comfortable with doing.

I have ballistix sport in my rig with an NH-D15:

Actually after looking at Cosmos II it looks amazing but the pricing is around 400 dollars in scandinavia. Ah, thats nice to know man.

Are you using both fans?

Another thing I am actually not 100% sure is the GPUs. I am currently looking at x2 Asus Strix 980 but I am open for suggestions.

I was going to go with 980s... but the performance of the 970 is pretty damn close, so I saved some money by doing 2 of those this time around.

I am currently not going higher than 2560x1440 but for the future I will surely be going 4k and the issues theyve had with the 970s is something that pisses me off greatly.....so I am currently not sure what to do. Cosmos iI is something I am really getting interested in but the price man is huge. Im wondering ihow many fans I will need for the Cosmos II to get good cooling with the SLI configuration.

In that case I would get some 120mm fans from Cooler Master.

Before you rule them out, know that I did some testing at 4K on my MultiSync monitor, and haven't seen any issues yet, maxed out all the way.

As far as the price:

Well, that's just me... I had spent over 10 grand already, what's another 400 for a case?

I have Noctua fans all around, 10 of them on the case, plus the radiators for both CPUs.

So you would say that 970 SLI would be good enough then?, becuase yes the 980 in SLI just seems way overprices imo.

My setup looks something like this:

Case: Cosmos II? (After ive looked more into it, it seems really awesome)

Mobo: Asus Rampage V Extreme (Or if there is a better option=

Processor: Intel i7 5930k

Cooler: Noctua NHD15

RAM: Cruciial Ballistic Sport:https://www.komplett.se/crucial-ddr4-ballistix-sport-32gb/82245416 gigs

GPU: Either 970 in SLI or 980 I am not sure yet.

PSU: Corsair RM850

Systemdrive: Intel 530 240 gig SSD

Storage: Western Digital Black 1TB

It bugs me that the 970 gets really bad when you use more then 3.5 gig of the 4 gigs that are available.....once the cards gets a few years on their necks I think it might limit the potential performance.

You could go with something like a Gaming 9 if you were so inclined. Asus boards are the best, IMO, but I still say you could get away with a lot less MOBO, for 2 drives, an X99-A or even X99-Pro from Asus would do you well. The only reason I went deluxe was for the SATA expansion, as I will have probably 9 drives in there, and I always have 8 different connected USB devices at least.

Im not sure if it still remains true but I've seen a lot of people criticize the RM series corsair PSUs for using cheap quality components. The most recommend ones are the EVGA G2 and all of the seasonic PSUs so I'd stick to either of those

EVGA has a bundle on newegg, it's actually what I bought... 2 970s and a 1000w platinum PSU for ~850 iirc.

Most of the ATX Corsair cases also handle EATX. The exceptions are the 100R, 200R, and Spec-XX models. Phanteks Enthoo Pro, Luxe, and Primo. Most of the Nzxt Phantom cases as well as the Switch 810, H630, and Source 530. Fractal Design Arc XL, Core 3500, Define XL and XL2. A number of these are pretty reasonably priced. The question is do any of them appeal to you?

I haven't really looked into those cases more in detail.

As I see It I have two alternatives

1. Get the Asus Rampage V Extreme with either the CM Storm HAF X or the Cosmos II, or look at any of the other alternatives and see if those cases appeal to me.

2. Choose another board then the EATX variant, and get the case I really want. Which will most likely mean less money.

If I were to choose another board than the Rampage V Extreme, which board should i go for if i primarily look at Asus boards for the X99 socket?

My choice would be the X99-Pro. But there is also the X99-Deluxe and on the bleeding edge, the X99-Deluxe/U3.1.

You have to look at the case every day. Unless a different case really appeals to you, my advice would be to go with the one you like.

The X99 Deluxe/U3.1 just bundles the USB 3.1 card with the package, unlike most of the other Asus boards, where it's built in. Still it's cheaper to get that one, instead of the non USB 3.1 and then getting yourself a card.

Asus X99 Deluxe/U3.1 $409.99

Asus X99 Deluxe $382.99

Asus USB 3.1 card $39.99

Asus X99 Deluxe+USB 3.1 card $422.98
