Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Sense ID Fingerprint Scanning

DSC_3455_678x452.jpg

Qualcomm has gone and perhaps created a far better method of fingerprint detection for phones than what is currently being used - ultrasonics. Better resolutions AND the ability to have a sensor anywhere on the phone and not just in the place of the home button or what have you. Good development for those among us who use the tech and perhaps a good way to make it more accurate and secure so it is worth using.

While most fingerprint sensors currently use high-resolution capacitive sensors, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sense ID uses ultrasonic sound waves in order to map the surface of the finger. This allows for greater resolution to recognize features such as pores and fingerprint ridges to improve security, along with reduced sensitivity to moisture and other contaminants. In addition, this technology can work through glass and sapphire cover lenses, along with metal and plastic casings.

Snapdragon Sense ID will launch first on Snapdragon 810 and 425 devices, but will be compatible with all 400, 600, and 800 series Snapdragon SoCs, and will support the FIDO authentication standard.

I'm excited to see this work in person, and see if it's any faster or slower than Apple's current implementation.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Qualcomm's tech improves on existing scanners by verifying fingerprints in 3D using ultrasonic sound technology, picking up features like the size of fingerprint ridges. Most sensors today can only read fingerprints in 2D, a limitation that makes it easier for hackers to replicate fingerprints by lifting them from, say, a drinking glass.

With three dimensions to check, the new scanner would theoretically be much more difficult to break into something protected by a biometric. the new scanner would theoretically be much more difficult to break into something protected by a biometric. Touch ID uses capacitive fingerprint scanning, meaning it only scans in 2D.

Qualcomm's 3D sensor can also scan through smartphone cover glass, aluminum, stainless steel, sapphire and plastic, according to the company, so a device manufacturer could incorporate the scanner in any part of the product's design — including the phone's display itself.

We have, of course, yet to see the Qualcomm scanner in action, so its effectiveness is unclear. The sensor tech will be directly compatible with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 425 processors, and Sense ID will also be available as a standalone feature.

Besides Apple, Samsung is the only other major smartphone manufacturer that has built fingerprint sensors into most of its high-end devices, including the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge phones. It is rumored that the South Korean company may be ditching Qualcomm chips in many devices, though — the global versions of the new phones use Samsung Exynos chips — which means some Samsung phones would probably lose out on Sense ID.

Qualcomm expects Sense ID to be available in commercial devices later this year.

sounds sorta cool be interesting to see if it really works tho and how good it will be

I wonder if Motorola will implement this in their next Moto X, because that dimple is a perfect resting spot for your index finger. They were going to do this for the Nexus 6, but something about Apple buying the company didn't allow them.
