6300 will also clock much higher making it a stronger part for gaming...if you don't already have these cpu's i'd suggest a core i3 instead.

Seeing as he is building it out of old parts, i will make the assumption that he already has an AM3 board. That would make buying a cheap FX or Phenom II an alright idea. However, if he has everything except mobo and cpu, then yes, i3 all the way.

So I'm putting together a gaming build for my little brother out of old parts. Would a phenom 965 BE or an fx6300 be better for gaming??

I would wait to get a 8320 and oc it

He is building it out of old parts, his first post says this. The 8320 will not be a good idea on an old board, as you wont be OCing it on anything less than 990FX. For that price, you could easily get a cheap i3 and be better for gaming, which is all he is intending to do for his younger brother.

the ironic thing is I do have a 990fx, but you're right, I am not buying anything, just building it. I will say he is just really interested in minecraft, I figured the 965 BE would have been the favorite because its per core performance is much better. I can speak for that because my 965 did so much better in BF4 than my 6300 ever did. Of course neither compare to my 4690k haha.
