My new co-worker says he build a computer with a sandy bridge and a GTX 480 (so a few years ago).

The strange thing is that he has a RAM cooler. Something that clips to the RAM clips and has 2 small fans on it blowing down to the RAM.

Is this something that's completely unneeded or is it actually somewhat needed? He said it's DDR3 at about 2000Mhz.

Its not rally needed but they are nice to have. I have a couple of OCZ XTC-2's because they look cool while keeping my RAM cool.

Not needed at all, mainly they are just there to show off and waste power.

The thing is... "heat spreaders" on RAM are a joke because they don't even have thermal compound or anything on them. I would guess they actually make it hotter by insulating it if anything.

There should be thermal tape / adhesive between the actual DRAM IC's and the metal heatspreader -- like what you find on VRAM IC's on graphics card.
