GTX 970

Go to solution Solved by Sauron,

the 980's vram is all one speed unlike the 970s slower last .5GB, so for higher resolutions that extra, fast .5GB can help, along with the increased performance of the card overall.

Except you can get 2 R9 290Xs for less money. Those have 4 full gb of perfectly functional and even higher bandwidth vram as well as wiping the floor with a 980 in terms of performance when crossfired. If he really must spend 500$ in graphics cards for 1440p (which I don't recommend anyway) that would be a far better choice. Besides for 1440p 3gb are still perfectly fine. And by the time he'll need more he'll have upgraded already.

Yes, though a 980 would be optimal.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

No, it would be a waste of money.

is the 970 good enough to run a 1080p monitor to multi task and game on a 1440p monitor?

Yes, having secondary monitors does not impact gaming performance. Depending on what the prices are where you live consider getting an R9 290x instead, it's usually significantly cheaper and performs pretty much the same at 1440p.

It would only offer better performance for games that support crossfire, and there are some games that are quite VRAM hungry and can easily eat up 3+GB even at 1080p.

That depends on the person. It was definitly not a waste of money in my case to buy a 980.

Someone else might think playing videogames is a waste of money in general.  ;)

Why was it a good decision in your case when you could have spent the same money on 2 290Xs and resulted in 70% more performance? This is not a subjective matter, performance numbers and price tell you all you need to know. The 980 is terrible value for the price, as is usually the case with the highest end solution in GPU lineups. The 780, 780ti and 290x had the same problem when they were launched. There are very few scenarios where a 980 makes a little bit of sense, but it's almost never the case. If form factor is a problem there's the 295x2, which is priced very close. Especially considering you'll need to upgrade just as soon as you would have with a 970. Power consumption is also irrelevant at that price point because the power savings are in quarters.

There are no games that require more than single 290x performance at 1440p and don't support crossfire, except some which are so poorly optimized that even a 980 will struggle heavily. And the benefit of a higher resolution is that you don't have to waste vram in AA and DSR trying to achieve fake resolution, which are the only reason some games take more than 3gb at 1080p. You can ask @othertomperson (sorry to keep bothering you for this ;)) who's running 4k perfectly fine with two 970s.

Simple answer: Only the 980 and 970 have the new Gigabyte Windforce cooler right now. So AMD wasn't an option. And the 980 has a bit more power than the 970. So the 970 was also not an option.

So it is a subjective matter, cause I don't give a fuck about that extra 70% of performance.

Give me one reason the windforce cooler matters except for aesthetics. And the 970 would still have been a much better choice. 10% more performance does not justify paying 200$ more. So no, it was not a "good" decision. If aesthetics are more important to you than performance or money, it was a reasoned tradeoff. Not something you can recommend to other people.

I didn't recommend it to anyone. And even if I would, I would always mention the high price someone has to pay for the card.

But like I said, it was a good decision to buy a 980. I've everything I wanted now and money was never something I would've cared about.

Hey, employees of AMD and Nvidia need to eat, too :P

I'm sure they're not risking to die, especially at nvidia ;) but I probably shouldn't have gone down that tangent, it's not really relevant to the question at hand.

thanks alot guys this helped

You can mark a post as "best answer" to close a topic :) that way people won't think you're still looking for an answer. It can even be your own post.

You think every employee at Nvidia is paid well above minimum wage, then? Unlike literally every other tech employer? :P

They still get to eat don't they? ^^ and I doubt selling a few more 980s will make any difference in their salary
