I have an old pc

Newer graphics cards are designed to be used with newer CPUs, pairing a good graphics card like R9 280X for example will not make sense with an E8400 as you'll be limiting the performance of 280X in many scenarios, but with low end cards like R7 250X you'd be OK.

You could add up to a R7 260/ GTX 750Ti and see nice gains in performance, an OC to around 4.0ghz on the CPU will help you out too.

I'm thinking of adding a GTX 980 from Asus...

Well that'd be a bit daft, that's like trying to fit a V12 engine to a 1990 nissan micra :P

With that CPU, maybe an R7 260 or 750 would be fine.

Would a Core i5 4440 suffice ???

Yes. More than enough.

Your main problem is that it is probably Gen 2 x16 and I know that makes small differance but still can be an issue. Other problem is your chipset. I had a old AMD system with Gen 3 x16 and a 1 year old CPU but because it was an hp and it used a 3 year old Chipset, it would not run any card.

How about a Core i5 4440 , (8x2) Corsair LPX DDR3 , Asus H87 ???

8GB DDR3 is enough for gaming...i'd spend that elsewhere...probably a slightly higher clocked i5.

In most games yes, but i'd suggest you buy a GTX 970 instead and buy an unlocked i5-4690K CPU and a Z97 motherboard..the GTX980 is only ever so slightly faster than the 970 but cost significantly more...that money would be better spent on a better processor/motherboard that can support SLI IMHO or maybe even an SSD...the GTX 980 as a huge price premium.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

you might also want to look at an AMD R9 290 or R9 290X GPU with a good third party cooler on it...those are often quite a bit cheaper and still are high-end cards that rivals the GTX 970 in most situations.

Would a Core i5 4440 suffice ???

There's 3 or 4 posts in your thread saying a i5-4440 will indeed suffice :P
