im a little bit more inclined to amd at this point

always been a green boy but with the issues ive had in the past and the vram drama on the 970 sounds like a 290x will be my pick

whats the best model or 3rd party vendor at this point?

I'd get a 290X, though it does output more heat and consume more power, so that's one thing going for the 970.

I'd think that the 290X would be less expensive, and imo wins me over.

I myself am actually going to wait for AMD's 300 series for a 390X, and shouldn't be too long off, maybe one to one and a half months.

MSI Lightning is the best R9 290x.

Next best is the Sapphire Tri-X.

Between the two I'd get the Tri-X since it's priced better.

Well, to be fully honest the Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290x 8GB is the best R9 290x, but it runs $460.

Yeah the 290X isn't the most power efficient, I don't know how it'd compare to the 580, but from what I can see by some Google image analysis a 290X along with the system draws about 400Ws.

As much as I hate to say it, the 970 is your best bet right now.

I don't like recommending it because of Nvidia lying about it, and retailers continuing to lie about it, but up until you hit 3.5gb of Vram, it is absolutely ROCK SOLID. I can run all of my games on ultra, with everything turned up to unnecessary levels, and not have a problem. When I turn DSR on, things get iffy.

It's a good card, if Nvidia would issue an apology for lying about it, and instruct the retailers to not say "4gb Vram", I would have no problems with recommending it.

Yes, the card physically contains 4gb of Vram, but only 3.5gb of that is usable while gaming, go over, and you get problems, which deserves either a 3.5 rating, or at the least a 4gb with an asterisk saying "only 3.5 usable at most"
