Quick Question about Mobo's

Go to solution Solved by x Relentless Xx,

You CAN overclock on H81 and B85, its just much harder to do. Like others stated, Z87/Z97 boards are built to overclock.

no. only z97 boards officially support overclocking.

some Asus and Asrock h97 boards support overclocking but that's it.

Yes, it can oc a pentium, but nothing more than that. Plus there are much cheaper H81 boards, plus a pentium is usually not a great choice -- an i3 is almost always the better.

There are no i3 with unlock clocks, and there is a Pentium with it.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

Even at stock speeds an i3 is still usually the better choice, as two cores really isn't enough for anything more than basic use these days.

Hell, some newer games won't even launch on a dual core cpu without modifying some files.

The Pentium g3258 can be pretty good with an overclock though.

The Pentium g3258 can be pretty good with an overclock though.

Great, even. It all depends how the program is written to take advantage of certian qualities within each specific chip.

The g3258 i feel will stay a good choice for about another 6 months or so, and still be veru useable for another 2 years maybe?

Its also cheaper than alot of i3s.

It also isn't a good choice for any newer games as even a locked i5 will outclass it in most. A dual core cpu yields terrible frame timings in many games, which results in a nice high average FPS but awful stuttering.

Two years....I doubt it. It already struggles in many games.

but you're forgetting...

ITS SIXTY DOLLARS

any i5 that is worth the moeny is atleast 150, last time i checked.

we're not talking preformance. we're talking value. the i5s are very good value, but they eat up half the 300$ budget, and we have other things to get aswell. :/

and the cheapest i3 avialable is over 100$....

i know, i know, we can squeez in better preformance.

but ever so slightly (and i mean miniscule almost) drop in preformance and being able to come out UNDER budget??? better option right there.

An i3 is still the better choice. An i3 setup will run him $260~ and an i5 setup will run $350~. Both of which are WELL worth the extra money. Especially when it's being paired with a 980 ffs.
