Software for designing a room?

I want to start planning my room for the best possible setup when i move room in the coming years.

Is something like Google sketch-up the best for something like this?

planner 5d is pretty cool

A piece of paper, a ruler and a pencil is easier but I used 3dsmax for planning out a room once, otherwise planner 5d as stated before works well too

Before I design anything (auditorium, studio, whatever) I always draw it by hand and do the calculations on paper first.

 

It's better that way, then you can work in 3D apps for the finer details later.

google sketch up costs money since the last year or two, which kinda blows.

 

software that i can think off:

blender(free, hard to get into)

cinema 4D(expensive)

maya(expensive)

3DS max(expensive)

and as last resort

photoshop, which should have a 3D function in its extended version, don't know how good it works myself, found it only once by accident
