Once you hit that point you'll be looking at headphones that probably need a bit more power.  What sound card do you have now?

Good headphones at that price point are the Beyer DT880, Sennheiser HD600, and AKG K702s to name a few, but most of these will benefit from a proper source with a low output impedance.

I don't currently have a sound card because I do not have good enough headphones to need one yet. I'm following the sticky audio thread. But iI could get an Asus Xonar Essence STX for $150.

For that sort of price range i would say that you are a tier up from the AKG/Beyer/Sennheiser recommendations. I would say you're up into the Shure SRH-1440 / Hifiman HE400 area.

Do you mind an external sound card? The Essense STX won't suit a some of these headphones that well.

I have a Asus Xonar Essence ST PCI sound card for sale if you want to buy it. Really don't want to sell it but it blocked my second graphics card.

I'm in the states so I'd prefer to sell it to somebody here. Let me know!

As far as headphones, Sennheiser HD598, HD600, HD650 would all be a great choice for headphones.

No, I would actually rather an external sound card/dac. I do not like the look of these headphones, not that anything is wrong with them.

Have a look at the Logitech UE 900 or Sennheiser HD 598

I would rather an over the ear headphones not in ear, unless you meant UE 9000, in that case are those wireless? The Sennheiser 598 seem like great headphones but I can't get past the noctua color sheme even when they're $260 :O

within the $400 mark you can usually find the sennheiser HD650s on sale at that price. When i picked mine up they were just over 400.

Can't say i've used a lot of high end audio equipment, but my 650s+ essence stx is a glorious combo.

Ya they're $550 on amazon right now, and I'm sure that that would be an awesome combo!

Well, there are plenty of nice looking headphones like the Audeze LCD-2 and the Sennheiser HD800 if you spend BUCKS.  I'm not sure what kind of style your after, but the original AKG K701 is still one of my favorite designs in your price range.

If you want an external DAC and you want to spend that sort of money on headphones (and especially if you select a headphone like the AKG K701) you'll want an external AMP/DAC like the O2+ODAC or FiiO E10.

Ideal Headphones w/out the mic and higher impedance

http://prntscr.com/1crwls

Oh? You like the Beyer Design?

http://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-880-Premium-600-Headphones/dp/B0024NK35S/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1372602887&sr=8-13&keywords=Beyerdynamic

You'll definitely need an amp for the 600Ohm version though.  There's the T1 too, that looks even fancier.

What's better MMX300 or the DT 880?

Any mods for the MMX 300 to remove the microphone?

As far as i know the MMX300 is a DT770 with a mic attached, would be a waste of money to get them if you don't want the mic.

Could look at the Beyerdynamic T70 which is slightly more than your budget but very nice. Denon D600 would also be an option or the Philips Fidelio X1. There are a lot of great choices at that price.

Oddball is correct it's the T70 with a mic attached.  A bit expensive for what you get, but if you like the design, go for it.
