It's not normal, even without a fan under the GPU it shouldn't idle at 60°C... Maybe the thermal paste they put in there is bad or makes bad contact, and if your room is hot the situation worsen even more... Seen it's a 970 shouldn't have that much dust, but you know, cleaning a bit ain't bad... ^^

you might need a rma. do you  have gpuz or afterburner. what is the fan speed?

it would seem that asus has the 0 fan thing untill 67c then the fans kick on. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2351114/asus-gtx-970-strix-idle-temp.html

if you're are getting good frames then your card is fine and GLHF

ps. the sharks on stranded deep just got a lot scarier.

What are your GPU clocks when playing BF4?

If its just the idle temps that are bad, it could be due to the core not clocking down when its not being used (set the power management in the nvidia control panel to adaptive in global settings), because the idle temps should not be that close to the load temps.

they just did a update, added more fish and other things. made sharks hunt you more and bite even when you're looking. they can also flip your raft much easier.

That should be where it is, but seeings as you don't seem to know of it, and that it's set to adaptive by default, I suspect the source of this problem is elsewhere.

The other option is full power mode. I doubt that'll change anything.

I've had time where I set it to prefer max power, in my infinite wisdom, and it forced the gpu to run at a much higher clock, and lead to much higher temps in idle.

And setting it to Adaptive changed that? It only affects 3D loads. Not idling(in theory).

I just checked my settings. My Power Management mode is Adaptive and my 970 is idling at 899MHz.

But the problem here is that the high idle core clocks are leading to the high temps, not the fact that the fans are off. Even then the fans should turn on at around 60C, which is what his cards idle at.
