Buying Own Modem

Go to solution Solved by FreeDiver,

Do you also have phone service? That's the only issue I'm really having with buying a modem.

Here's one I found on amazon, its a little expensive but it comes with a battery so you can continue using the phone if the power goes out.

http://www.amazon.com/Arris-TM822-Touchstone%C2%AE-Ultra-High-Telephony/dp/B00721TUNS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1423970150&sr=8-2&keywords=modem+with+phone+jack

Edit :Also what internet speed do you have?

So currently we have Comcast for phone, internet, and cable, but we want to purchase a modem so we can stop renting it from Comcast ($10 dollar charge every month). The one we are currently renting is an Arris DOCSIS 3.0 Residential Gateway . However, I want to purchase something like an Arris / Motorola Surfboard as a replacement. The problem is that the modem we are renting from Comcast has a phone jack for our home phone service and finding a modem with a phone jack isn't as easy as it seems. Is there any way around this? Or are there any other modems that will work?

Also any router recommendations? Currently have a Linksys E2500 , not sure If I should upgrade or not.

You are not "renting" the comcast modem. You are paying for internet. The modem is free, because you NEED that modem to get internet, provided by comcast.

What you are thinking of is a ROUTER. A router CANNOT replace a modem.

That's because you NEED the gateway device for your internet.

They're basically just charging you $10 more for your internet plan.

So what you are saying is that I can't get my own device? Even though people do it all the time. I just need one that has a telephone jack for the home phone.

I have never seen anyone replace the modem from their ISP, but I just googled and found several "modems" that do have a phone line in.

No guarantee if they will work though...

My ISP provides no charge for my modem, because I'm pretty sure it is against their terms and conditions to use a custom modem.

Ummm.... Replacing the isp modem is extremely common practice because most of the bundled hardware they give you is absolute rubbish. Any aftermarket one should work fine out of the box just make sure you are getting a modem router combo.

And yes the modem is being rented from the isp. This happens all the time.

I swapped my telstra one with a Netgear D6300 and absolutely no qualms.

I literally just replaced my ISP's modem last week with my own (Motorola surfboard) and am now saving $8 a month.

Here's one I found on amazon, its a little expensive but it comes with a battery so you can continue using the phone if the power goes out.

It's funny I was just looking at that. Current speeds are 87Mps down and 12Mps Up. Apparently the modems need to be eMTA for it to be compatible.

Yep but we continue renting the phone from the isp. To use both all you need is an in-line splitter/filter which takes the line signal from the wall and splits it into two: one for phone and one for modem.

Like this http://www.amazon.com/White-Socket-Splitter-Filter-Phone/dp/B00FH9W0SO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1423970808&sr=8-3&keywords=modem+filter

So how does your phone one work? Is it like a box just for the phone?

I'm not entirely sure what you are asking. Is what like a box for just a phone?

I didn't see the link at first. I don't think a splitter like that will work. The modem we have now is connect to a coaxial for internet. The modem itself then has a phone jack port built into it.

Oh ok. In that case no. For mine the signal comes from the wall, goes into the splitter/filter box which has two outputs and then the modem and the phone both plug into the splitter.

Take a look at this modem and read some of the comments.

http://www.amazon.com/Arris-Tm722g-Cable-Modem-Docsis/dp/B0056NRU3G

I' v been looking at the comments for the TM822g which you posted earlier. It's a bit more than what I wanted to spend, but it is pretty much exactly what I want. Thanks for all the help
