what version of linux should i install

So i am going to install linux to test a theory of mine.

 

Please let me know the version, and the reasons its best, and a guide to install it.

Ubantu or Kali.

 

Both very powerful OS's. Personally I use Kali, having been a user of Backtrak before it was discontinued.

Linux Mint for a 1 click easy setup with an OS that is closer to window-like than a lot of linux distros (I would highly recommend this for beginners). Arch Linux if you want bare bones cutting edge but have to spent time fixing/changing/setting up things.

Fedora is also quite nice.

May I ask you why in the world you would use Kali as your linux distro? It's meant for security testing right?

Linux from scratch is pretty fun to do on a weekend, a few fridays. I'd go with Gentoo personally.

Definitely go with Mint. I'd recommend KDE or Xfce versions since Cinnamon is still relatively new. A lot of people are suggesting Ubuntu, but I absolutely hate the non- "customizability" of Unity. There are some workarounds for Unity, but it still kind of sits there and annoys you.

The out of box customization of Unity is insane thanks to it leveraging the C++ variant of Compiz. Sure the bars on the side and top are stationary but other than that there's so much more you can do out of the box with Ubuntu than most other distributions. Installing Compiz on Mint alone is the true definition of the term a bitch. Mint is a great distribution but when it comes with out the box customization Ubuntu really has it.

Yeah Compiz can get very annoying very quickly, and yes your set-up is super sexy, but I just cannot deal with the side-bar.

I don't have any problems with Compiz 0.9 other than it crashing once in a blue moon (very rare). Tho it reboots itself and all is good. Install CCSM it makes handling Compiz settings much easier. I personally can't stand the task bar in Windows being on the side of the screen. Tho with how Unity is setup with the top panel it really doesn't bother me because it's far more ascetically pleasing than Windows. There's always alternative routes as well such as auto-hiding the side bar and using another launcher like Docky.
