Do all IPS panels look the same?

They would looks similar but not the same. Not all ips panels are manufactured by the same companies.

Different models/makes? Definitely not. They'd look very similar, but not exactly the same. Not even two monitors from the same production batch would look the same, manufacturing tolerances and all that make it so each one is ever so slightly different. It's very difficult to notice, but instruments will tell you they may have slightly different brightnesses, colors, etc.

Not quite, I have one calibrated IPS  monitor and one not, and the difference is somewhat noticible.

In saying that, I don't think I would be able to tell the difference between them if they were both calibrated, and they weren't side by side though

If not they're a waste of money... the whole point of paying a premium is for a calibrated, uniform experience (within tolerance).

True, but most monitors don't come factory calibrated. Only "Pro" series displays generally do, and it's usually a stated feature. For example, the ASUS Pro Art series.

Most IPS monitors are not factory calibrated, beyond the most basic sense that every monitor is put through a super basic calibration.

Which is why this forum's obsession with IPS is a bit nonsensical. The main point people make about them depends on an extra step that isn't actually a given. Which given the fact that if you're willing to do the same with a TN panel you can get sRGB of ~95% actually is quite an omission.

True, actually calibrating a TN panel can yield impressive results, but there are other benefits to IPS. It depends on the individual person and their preferences.

If you want ultra fast and low response times, decent colour, and shitty viewing angles, then TN is the way to go.

If you don't care as much about response times, but picture quality is of utmost importance to you, then IPS is the way to go.

Different for everyone. Some people probably do only like IPS simply because Linus does, but many, including myself, prefer them for my own reasons.

But a properly calibrated quality IPS display will still look better then a properly calibrated quality TN panel, even if the differences become less when you get a high quality panel of either type.

The thing is most people on this forum only use them for gaming, and they're almost exclusively sitting directly in front of them all of the time. I reckon that a blind trial of members on this forum would reveal a relative few who could even tell which they were looking at, provided that whichever it was was a high quality display.

You can calibrate it yourself w/ a light meter. Linus did a video on one.

Alternatively you could take it to a professional AV technician I suppose.

I don't believe the ROG Swift comes pre-calibrated.
