3 Brothers- Tom, Jerry and James - ate 17 cakes. Tom ate more cakes then Jerry and James. What is the max number of cakes that Tom could have eaten?

Well, it all depends if the other brothers had to eat at least one cake each. It doesn't say so in the question, so I'll say the two brothers eat 0 cakes and tom eats 17. If they must eat at least one cake, @Fate is right.

If James is Jerry's friend , he is likely to be a mouse ..so he too couldn't have eaten a whole cake !..

So... Tom must have eaten about 16.8 cakes .

If James is toms friend , he is likely to be a cat !

So... Let's say , that jerry ate .10 of a cake .. So that leaves 16.90 cakes !

Tom ate more cakes than James , then knowing that cats hate to share , tom must have eaten 9 cakes ...because , you know , James is a cat too... And he would kill his friend if his share isn't fair enough , but keeping in mind that tom has to eat more than James , tom gets to eat 9 cakes !!

If James is neither of tom's nor Jerry's friend, then tom kills both of them , and eats all 17 cakes ... Because he is a cat !!
