PhysX/AMD/nVidia/Whatever...

Kevin_Walter

I've heard that some people have had success with using an old/cheap nVidia GPU specifically to run PhysX alongside their AMD GPUs.

I've also heard murmurs of this only working on some older games, and nVidia basically locking out the ability to do this on most newer ones.

Just curious about information on whether or not this is still a viable/possible thing. Even if just on older games, I think it would be an interesting thing to have running. Has anyone done this, and if so, what cards did you use/how did you set it up?

imo I don't see the purpose of buying an old gpu, as driver support, software, power usage, and overall just it being old is not worth it, despite the possibility of getting a last-gen cheaper then latest gen. (However if you still own a working old gpu might aswell use it (talking gtx 580 or something like that not some nvidia dinosaur 4000)

Not worth it. Last time i checked, it required a custom driver to get both cards to work. It's too much of an arseache just for a little Nvidia only gimmick.

Its possible, but not a good idea...

I think PhysX adds nothing to game as well...

You would be wrong.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

hybrid phsyx, only works with older drivers and needs a work around as i tried it recently, unlike mantle not much uses physX and it doesnt really add much :P
ultimate hybrid physX!

its doable with a 600 series or older nvidia card, although a few of the newest games that use hardware accelerated physx require a version of physx that cannot be circumvented. it's no longer worth the trouble. it never really was tbh.

Check this out:

Card has to be strong ENOUGH or it'll slow down the actual GPU

@Kevin_Walter

Semi Major Point - You DO lose all recent driver optimizations by having to use older drivers. This is NOT good.

MAJOR POINT - There are also games that just outright won't work because of how the DLL files are used, cannot be done for certain titles, this defeats the whole purpose.

More of a headache THESE days than before when it was a thing.

Setting up a legacy PC.? There would be many guides by now on how to do so.

These days...

If you want PhysX, buy Nvidia.. as your primary card.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I agree that PhysX isn't "worth" an extreme cost. I also don't think it adds a whole lot to a game.

I was recently loading up Arkham Asylum and saw the Hardware Accelerated PhysX option, which I turned on for the poops and giggles. Of course, having both an AMD CPU and GPU, it made the game run terribly in any area where there was something related to PhysX. For instance, the very first vent that I went through had a spider web that moved and flow when it was bumped into, which caused my framrate to tank down to like 20.

I'm currently running an FX 6300 and an R9 270X. Nothing is overclocked.

I was just mildly interested in buying a cheap, sub-$100 nVidia GPU with PhysX drivers available for it, to give it a shot in some older games. Just as more of something to tinker with, rather than an actual solution to a no-PhysX problem that I don't really think exists.

Nope, Nvidia locked it out of AMD, if any Physx is implemented it's done through the CPU rather than the GPU if you have any modern AMD GPU.

Sorry but it's just another useless locked down Nvidia "innovation"

There are also multiple levels of PhysX implemented and used in conjunction with eachother.

PhysX as we all know it,... AND APEX PhysX

CPU's cannot do Apex well, but some can manage non-apex PhysX okay (Hawken on AMD GPU's)

Think of it like, PhysX years ago, 1.0 and now Apex would be the better PhysX library.

PhysX was in Planetside 2, then they added in Apex PhysX  as well with a major update.

Extra Particles, people love that shit.
