Has PCI e 3.0 gone extinct?

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

I dont really want to crossfire or sli anything. I just want to know if one gtx 980 will work fine on that board. No sli. and yes with the 8350

One 980 should be alright.

Im trying to find an am3+ motherboard with a good chipset that has atleast one pcie 3.0 slot. There are literally none (atleast on the part picker website). I need one that has a red color scheme and that can run an fx 6300 and an fx 8350. I found this awesome looking asrock board (yes the looks matter alot for me because I have a side window) but it doesnt have pci e 3.0 slots, only like 3 pci 2.0 x 16. So do I need a 3.0 slot to run an r9 280x with full capacity? or can I just run it on the 2.0 slot and it will be fine? Because there are literally no mobos with pci 3.0 slots, much less red ones. Price range is anything under $200 CAD and has to have usb 3 and sata 6gb/s (atleast 2) Also Im going to be overclocking so thats a fact if its important.

am3+ has gone extinct...but to answer your question, no you do not need PCIe 3.0, you'll be fine with 2.0.

The FX chips are pretty old. They don't have native support, and the only board (I think) with PCI-E 3.0 is the Sabertooth because it has a PLX chip.

You do not need 3.0 to run any GPU to it's fullest capacity.

AM3+ is a dead socket...for example, the 990FX only supports 32 lanes PCIE 2.0...

A lot of the older AMD stuff doesn't have PCIe 3.0, but you'll be able to run a graphics card fine on 2.0, since the performance impact is next to none unless you do Crossfire or SLI with higher end cards.

The AM3+ socket is old. Some motherboards using that socket have PCIe 3.0 but they use a PLX chip(I think) to give 3.0 speeds. PCIe 3.0 is certainly not dead as newer video cards use it and boards released since Ivy Bridge have been using the PCIe 3.0 standard.

Your motherboard does not have PCIe 3.0.

So what you guys are saying is even if I bought a Gtx 980, it would run well on this mobo with pci e 2.0, unless I made it crossfire or sli(which I wont be doing)?

I wouldn't do it with even the 8350 personally.

I looked at the chipset and I wouldn't really SLI 980s on the 970 chipset. The two PCIe 2.0 slots get bumped down to x8 when both are in use.
