Hey !

...just want some opinions about replacing the fan on my CX430 power supply.

It's a brand new PSU and I know that it will void the warranty but I don't care.

The fact is that I have a fan lying around, a new Fractal Design R2 and I was

wondering if it's suitable to use in a PSU. The stock fan is verrrry noisy, 0k, not

that much actually but the FD R2 is so much quieter...

Anyway, it's rated around 40CFM, is it enoug for a small PSU ? The stock Yate

Loon fan is rated 80CFM but test shows that in reality, it's more around 50, go figure...

Any input is welcome...

Thanks !

- oh, yeah, I know about hi voltage danger and capacitors, I build amps... connecting it is not a problem...

I swapped out the fan in my CX430M for a Blade Master, and the damn thing never spun (too low of voltage) for a week and it was fine. I think it'll work fine, since even an NZXT fan undervolted like crazy kept it icy.

BOOM GET NINJA'D.

Make sure the fan is of a suitable pressure optimized fan since it will have high air restriction inside of the PSU, and depending on the internal header you may need to fashion a 2 pin header for the fan since sometimes the 3 pin will not fit over the 2 pin. As usual wait 30 mins after unplugging and draining of PSU before beginning work on it and the usual don't touch any capacitors.

Or you know, don't wait 30 minutes (way too long), unplug the PSU from the wall, press the power button a few times, take it apart, and short the mains filter cap (the big one) with a screwdriver. Not that hard.

Do not short it it's not a good idea, there was a post about that on the forum late last year when someone did that, he was lucky he didn't have his hand any closer or it would have zapped him. the amount of power that capacitor has can be deadly in certain situations.

0K, I just plug the fan @5v @3.5v and it turns super easily...

Tomorrow I will do the mod and let you know...

As for voltage/caps, thanks for your advices...

I build guitar amps and I often "play" with 600+v :o

By the way,

there is a way to discharge caps with a resistor so it doesn't sparks but

I will not suggest that or talk about that as it's dangerous and yes, it can

actually kill you...

Thanks !

How can I verify that ? all I know is at 5v, I can feel it moves some air...

it's a case fan and not a CPU fan so it's probably not that pressure oriented ?

There should be specs on it is it this fan, if it is it's not bad it has 1.07 mmH20 in pressure which should be fine for the CX PSU, higher would be better but it should be adequate:

It's exactly that one, I'm glad to know that it will work...

Done !

Thanks for your help...

It's so silent I had to verified that the fan was actually turning...
