MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition (is it good?)

Does anyone here own one and is it good for overclocking and SLI?

That's the exact board I've intended to order. On Slick's motherboard video, I left a comment asking why he didn't feature it. The main responses were that it wasn't out at the time of filming, and..

  • Apparently it performs worse in games than even ASRock budget boards. (lol?)
  • It only has six USB ports. (Two 3.0, four 2.0)
  • It apparently only has four 6Gbps SATA ports.
  • It cannot overclock at all.
  • The 16x PCI-E slot is the bottom one, so cards like the MSi Lightning 290x don't fit.
  • Feature-wise, the board is barren.
  • It has a high rate of failure on the RAM DIMMs.

I don't know how many of these are true or not, so like the OP< I'd really appreciate having these answered.

Let me do my best here...

  • Damn near impossible.
  • Depends on the user. I find 8 kinda dicey.
  • It has 6.
  • Most boards overclock close to the same nowadays due to Intel moving more stuff on-chip.
  • There are two legacy PCI slots underneath the bottom x16 slot, so a Lightning card will fit.
  • It is fairly lacking in features, as far as I am aware.
  • This I am not entirely sure on, but it does seem weird. I am not sure how to comment on this.

1. Rubbish.

2. 2x USB 2.0 ports, 4x USB 3.0 ports.

3. 6x SATA III, 1x SATA Express and 1x M.2.

4. It can.

5. Easily debunked by looking at a picture of the board. Slots are in the usual layout, shouldn't be a problem with cards.

6. Compared to?

7. Rubbish!

Hi, I bought this mobo, it should be arriving tomorrow, if not on monday.

It will go with a i5 4590k i hope i remembered that right stupid naming scheme.

8Gb ram (2x4)

and my 2 gtx 970 SLI 3.5Gb LOL edition

I`ll report back once its installed, I may or may not overclock right away, but even if i dont do it right now i want to OC it to 4.5 at least, because of time, I have been very busy lately @__@

Just installed the Krait mobo, no issues at all, XMP worked right out of the gate, i haven`t updated the bios yet, and i won`t overclock today because i have to go to work in a few hours.

I played some games, no problems.

So far im liking it, loved the 2 cpu fan headers, since my h110 doesnt have a fan spliter.

Tell me if you want to know how my OC goes when i do it tomorrow.

I would love to know.

HI!, i`m currently stress testing with OCCT

I dialed in a 4.5Ghz OC on this mobo voltage is at 1.250v I will lower the voltage after some time with testing

Ram is @2400Mhz (xmp)

Temps hover between 57 and 71max with my H110

I won`t push it further since i bought this chip and have it running at 4.5 so im happy :D

so far so good, im not an overclocker, so i bet someone experienced can get better results.

What i did just now is disable turbo boost, multiplier to 45 on all cores, core voltage to 1.250v, enabled XMP for ram and thats it, so im pretty sure theres some headroom on this chip.

PD: OCCT tells me that my CPU VCORE is at 0.95v O__o so i have to check that xD
