Processor Compatibility Question

Might not be out of the box, since it's H81 and therefore will need a BIOS update to work with Haswell Refresh chips.

 

Look for 9 series chipsets, such as H97 and Z97 for out of box compatibility.

Just curious, how do you update the BIOS? I know it's a noob question but I've never done it before; thanks.

If my H87 motherboard is anything to go by, you would need to do a bios update first. The second last update for it was one that allows the use of the Pentium G3258.

You will need a USB flash drive and a Haswell CPU, such as the i5 4670 or i7 4770. You download the new BIOS from the manufacturer, put it on the flash drive, boot into the BIOS and install from there.

For example with that motherboard: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/H81I.html#down-bios  all of the updates are there, it varies between manufacturers.

Edit: and yes you will need a non Haswell refresh CPU, such as an i5 4440

So if I don't have  haswell CPU that works OOB with the H81 chipset it's impossible to update the BIOS?

If true is there any way I can know FOR SURE before I purchase the motherboard because I don't have a pre refresh Haswell CPU

Unless it were a Z87 ASUS board with BIOS Flashback (which it's not), it is impossible.
