So I have these 2 DDR2 workstations, one has 4gb of ddr2 and the other has 8gb. but when i try to either give the other first one al 8gb of ram it won't post. It also behaves the same way if I put 6 in each (each having 2 1gb sticks and 2 2gb sticks). Any ideas?

you must have a dead ram stick, try removing , switching them around to find the defective one

There's a lot of things that could be causing this.

ECC and Non-ECC RAM do not mix and the system will not post if you mix them.

You can have issues if the RAM speeds are different. For instance if 4GB of the 8GB is PC2-4200, but the other 4GB are PC2-6400 that can sometimes cause this.

The motherboard you are trying to upgrade to 8GB might not support the speed of those sticks, or it might not support more than 4GB at all.

I would try using all 8GB from the second workstation in the first workstation and not mixing the RAM at all. If it works you know theres a compatibility issue with using the sticks from both workstations together.

Most boards that use DDR2 are from before the days of 8GB or 16GB kits, so thy don't support that much. That being said it should run with the sticks in and just not recognize them. Of course it's older tech so it's going to be grumpy. Another thing is not all boards support large RAM modules, and maybe it can only handle 1GB sticks.
