Can i run it ....?

Hi

i'm going to upgrade to R9 280x or may be R9 280 Gigabyte .

 

but i don't know rather i can run it on a VS 550 with a rig in sig. or not . coz 80% means 440watts where PPP shows 452 watts.

actually i don't want system crashes during gaming when its using all the power i have ....will my rig bottleneck my PSU during high end gaming ?

i think it'll be just enough , probably need to get a higher one if you are going for a crossfire

you can run it if the 12v rail equals about 400W (Volts X amps=watts) EDIT-yes you can its around 42amp/500w on the 12v rail.

also power supply's show output dc current (to the system) regardless of efficiency, its capable of outputting exactly what it says.

my RM750w can output 750w (actually it did 971 for a good 30 seconds under furmark before i stopped it). at 90% efficiency it will draw about 830w from the wall if i managed to fully load it (which sli 480's in furmark with a cpu stress test does it seems)

here * means x, and .8 is 80% [learn fractions people]

550*1.2=660w from the wall

660w (from the wall) x .8= 528w to the system...not enough

680w (from the wall)= x.8=544w to the system. so thats about right.

if your system was 90% efficient, to get the 544w it can possibly deliverl it wouldnt waste as much and would only pull about 610w from the socket, hence more efficient power supplys save you money over time...but usually cost more.

1. System in IDLE = 121W
2. System Wattage with GPU in FULL Stress = 350W
3. Difference (GPU load) = 229W
4. Add average IDLE wattage ~10W
5. Subjective obtained GPU power consumption = ~ 239 Watts

you'll be around the 47% limit of what your psu can do so right in the sweet spot of where 80+ is measured

at 240w system draw in heavy gaming your pc will draw around (assuming 80% efficency) 300W from the wall.

yeah you are right . 280 not X . why Amd launched 280X ?????? i didn't understand as i compare the specs ! if i'm the CEO i'll never do this with few more bits and byte new launch will break down the sales....!!!

the 280x is a 7970 (full tahiti) core.

the 285 uses a cut down tahiti (7950 to be precise) core on a 7870 PCB.

replaced the 7870Tahiti le if anything (should of been the 7890)

the 280x is a 7970 (full tahiti) core.

the 285 uses a cut down tahiti (7950 to be precise) core on a 7870 PCB.

The R9-285 uses a different GPU core than the R9-270(X) or the R9-280(X).

It's updated GCN design (kind of like a working experiment...like the GTX 750Ti if you will)

• Tonga GCN 1.2 on the 285 versus Pitcairn GNC 1.0 on the 270(X)
• 359mm^s versus 212mm^2 die size
• Not Crossfire Bridge required on the 285 versus needed on the 270X
• etc

Rather, it is a new and condensed version of the Hawaii GPU in the Radeon R9 290 and 290X. Among other things this means it has four times the number of asynchronous compute engines, that's eight instead of the Radeon R9 280/280X's two.
